Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Head Gasket - How clean is clean?

    [NOTE: with the hotlinking image issue I still haven't figured out how to do it properly so I inserted 2 links here, You can d/l the pics and view full size.]

    I'd appreciate some advice from those who've done a head gasket replacement before. I've seen lots of general how-to's on this but I'm still lacking some detailed info. I don't want to screw up the job now . . .

    I've cleaned off the deck on the block -- but it's nowhere near as clean as the refurbed head I bought (obviously, since it was resurfaced). I've scraped the block mating surface with a plastic scraper, carb cleaner, rags, paper towels but it still looking grungy.

    -For guys who have done this before - does this look "typical" for a block ready to roll, or is there still work to do?

    -Upon close inspection, it looks to me like there is a very thin, clear plastic film on the block mating surface. I can see several index marks that are symmetrical around the cylinders. Does this need to be removed/cleaned up...or is this ok to put the gasket on top of?

    That is not a clear film, that is simply imprints left from heat cycles and the old head gasket seating between the block and the head. To me that is one clean block and you should be fine. If you got the head resurfaced then you are golden. Make sure you get new headstuds as well. Do not reuse your old ones unless you bought ARP. I have done multiple head swaps and haven't had issues and your deck is a lot cleaner then mine ever were

      That actually does look like some layer of film left over from a gasket. I'd be willing to bet you can catch it with your fingernail.

      About headstuds, I thought our motors had bolts securing the head to the block?

        I can almost catch my fingernail on the edge of that film. It's too thin to actually catch it but I can definitively tell there is a ridge, and it's not just a discoloration of the aluminum.
        And it's REALLY on there...I've scraped the @&$&#37; outta the surface with a plastic scraper and some non-abrasive cleaners and it won't budge. I don't want to resort to harsher measures if it's supposed to stay there.

        I should point out that this "film" is only around the cylinder bores and not outside of the water jacket area.

        About the bolts - there are indeed several bolts securing the head. I bought new ones rather than re-use the old.

          Gave my .02. Not sure what answer you are looking for. If you are worried you can get the block decked but that could change the compression a bit. Or you can get the copper head gasket spray which will seal any small micro crevices. Did you look at the old head gasket? Was there plastic on it? If so that is weird since the gasket should be metal. Not sure where a plastic film would come from.

          Like I said there shouldn't be any plastic and if you scrapped the living shit out of block, you would get some fragments of plastic film. Just saying.

          Head studs is another name for head bolts.

            Yep Grumpys93, I agree with you - I just wasn't sure I was clear enough.

            I've since looked at a bunch of online pics and I can see that same material...or pattern, whatever it is - on many F22A1 blocks that have been cleaned up. So it must be ok to leave. This is the first time I've done one of these and I figured now is not the time to rush the job!
