ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Transmission?

Has anyone ever had the problem where when you reverse your car does a hard jerk and grind? And what could it possibly be?

    Welcome to the forum.

    Interesting, need more info.

AT or MT? Which tranny do you have and how many miles does it have? Have the fluids been changed and did you use Honda MTF/ATF or Synchromesh? Do any other gears grind? Does the grinding happen when you're shifting in to reverse or just after driving? Maybe include a video.

It's an automatic with about 220k on it just changed the fluids about 4 months ago. I have the sport series. I could be going in slow as hell in reverse and it'll still grind and jerk the car.

There is no sport series. "Sport mode" is just a function found in all 90-91 Accords. It holds longer in each gear at partial throttle.

Anyway, what fluid did you use? These transmissions tend to be quite sensitive to fluid types, especially after 25+ years. Honda ATF, directly from your local Honda dealership, should be all you put in it. Synchromesh is a manual transmission fluid (just clarifying since Tishock mentioned it before you specified you have an automatic.)

Have you inspected your engine mounts? Bad mounts can potentially cause problems, especially with jerking. They're not terribly difficult to replace, and if they're original, they're definitely in need.

It's also possible that your transmission itself is just on the way out. These things are old, and often in poor condition due to neglect. Many people don't realize the importance of changing transmission fluid, and many of these things have likely gone most of their lives on the original fluid.

Finally, is your S light on or flashing at any time when it shouldn't be? If so, that would be indicating an error code from the transmission computer (TCU). The method for pulling that code can be found in the "READ HERE FIRST" thread stuck at the top of this section. If there's an error code, it will point you in the direction of something faulty with the transmission. That may or may not be related to the problems you're experiencing.

Grinding is a bad sign. If it was just jumpy, I'd say drain the fluid and refill with genuine Honda ATF, but this sounds mechanical to me. If it's only doing it in reverse, you can try avoiding situations that require you to use reverse and try and get as much life out of it as you can. If forward gears are fine, you should be able ok.

Is this happening for you when you turn on the car for the first time? Or is it happening after the vehicle has warmed up?

I am having the same exact problem. It has been occurring for a few years now. I personally have no idea what the issue is but a few shops have said different things.

Mine only occurs when the car is warmed up and the temperature gauge is a little above halfway. When mine is cold started it just pops and shakes when i put into reverse.

Wonder if it is the transmission mount?
