ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

F22 A4/A6 race motor build Questions

I'm looking to build a motor to race on a 1/4 mile oval dirt and or Asphalt track.
I have a Running F22A4 it runs ok, but I need more HP.
I have a F22A6 complete with blown head gasket that I could build. Would it be better to build or try and find a motor already built. I don't want to spend a fortune, but I know you get what you pay for.
Any suggestions would be helpful as I am new to the import Game.

    Thanks
    David

Finding a pre-built motor would be easier and probably cheaper, but you'll be at the mercy of the previous builder.

For now, swap the intake, cam and ecu(if you have it) from the F22a6 to the a4. should be good for a few HP.

Do you have the KSA's and tools to build your own?

If you stick to the basics - rings, bearings, timing belt, swap over your F22A6 parts - it should be cheaper than buying a pre-built motor. You aren't charging yourself for labor, after all.

Keep your F22A4 exhaust manifold. It's better than the F22A6 manifold.

Note that swapping in the F22A6 parts will only get you about 10 hp, 15 tops. If your existing motor is worn, you could get some hp back with a rebuild. If you remove the counterbalance shaft belt, you can get 3-4 hp at high rpm. Replacing the intake can get you a few hp.

If you want more power than this, it can get expensive. Ebay headers, including DC Sports, aren't much better than the F22A4 exhaust manifold. Larger exhaust will give you a few hp, but not that much, especially compared with the expense. Camshafts can help, but the F22A6 cam isn't bad and you will need to do some exhaust port work to really see the benefits of a bigger cam.

Thanks for the info. I do have the ECU from the A6 (PT6)
Should I swap the A6 intake or look for a H23 intake?

I was thinking about taking the head from the A6 and getting it reworked and maybe some port work, and or milling. Any thoughts on that? I do not know the history of my A4 motor, but it seems to be tight. It was a race car when I bought it. The head has been off and it is very clean under the valve cover.

A4 and A6 heads are completely interchangeable. If you like your A4 block and think it is good without having to rebuild, then just focus on the A6 head.

H23 plenum is a bit better than A6, but I don't know if you would notice the difference.

How fast do you get going on the track? Switching to a shorter gear h22 transmission might help you accelerate faster.

+1 for this, the h22 gearing will be a big difference in accelaration. Maybe look into a Delta cam grind.

I'm not sure of top speed, but the gearing seems good. I stay in 2nd gear and if I get a good run out of the corner it may hit the rev limiter just as I need to let off.

I put the A6 ECU in and after about four laps it would go into some kind of limp mode. Not sure what is going on. I put the A4 ECU back in and it ran fine. The A6 ECU seemed a little stronger, but not much. Any ideas what was going on?

I have ordered a light weight fly wheel, and I think I'm going to try and find some to work the head.
