Flex Pipe Leakage

Hey all. They say there's no such thing as a stupid question, but just wait.

I replaced the muffler on my 93 - it was well rusted and obviously falling apart. After the replacement I put my hand over the end of the pipe - at which point I could hear exhaust escaping from the flex pipe.

Is some leakage normal? It looks like a woven stainless steel mesh so I'm not sure how tightly that thing should seal. It takes a fair amount of pressure for it to start leaking. Is this worth replacing or should I let the fumes slowly destroy my brain?

There aren't supposed to be leaks from your exhaust system. As far as letting the fumes get to your brain thats your choice lol, I wouldn't recommend it though.

Yea that mesh isn't supposed to leak at all. just cut it out and replace it with some normal pipe.

Underneath the braid is the flex pipe. Just get another flex pipe of the same diameter inside welded on.

yeah flex pipes always break on any car equipped, do not replace it with a solid piece of pipe. any exhaust shop will weld in a new flex pipe fairly cheap

I used copper RTV silicone and some no hub coupling clamps without the rubber. It works but nothing to brag about.

Replace the flex pipe its under $100 installed. Mine cost $75 all-in CDN Installed at a shop. Cracked mine on some speed bump lol. Some garages sell the full downpipe from the manifold with flex pipe for $100-$130. I know a few here in Toronto that makes oem replacements for CB7s

The flex pipe is there to allow movement of the engine on the front and rear engine mounts. With a solid pipe in place of the flex pipe, the exhaust system will wind up reacting some of the torque of the engine and some part of it will fail prematurely. If the rest of the pipe is in reasonable condition, have the flex section replaced (as stated earlier). If the whole pipe is in bad shape, get a new one. I have use the Walker fled pipe with some success (all the aftermarket ones I've tried seem to have smaller pipe diameter and thinner walls than OEM).

Yikes amazed that worked at all. They make kits to fix exhaust leaks in pipes and the like but I don't see how any of it would work on a flex pipe. As others have said just replace the flex pipe. The only time I will remove the flex joint is if I put solid mounts on the engine and transmission. I don't recommend doing that for anything driven on the street.
