ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Bad Pulley?

Hey all, I'm having this whining/whistle come from under the hood all the time and I'm guessing its a pully but I'm not sure which one or if its a tensioner or what. I was wondering if our CB's have a history of certain pullies going bad and how to diagnose the problem. Thanks

    Chris

Joey GT-R Edit....The spelling error was bugging the hell out of me.

No, not really. Why don't you do some investigating under the hood. It would be a lot more effective than asking us what could be wrong with it.

Get a can of spray grease. Make sure it has the extension part you stab into the nozzle (like a wd-40 can) and while running, spray just a little tiny bit behind each pulley. When it stops, you've found your issue. If it's a pulley issue.

Doesn't have to be grease but I use grease cause it'll last longer then pb blaster and all that jazz until you can get it replaced.

If it's the actual belt itself, make sure all the pulleys are aligned correctly.

Does this noise always happen or just during certain weather or engine speeds? how long has the noise been there? Was any work done on the car when or shortly before the noise started? We need more info to help you. Start by just making sure the accessory belts are tensioned properly. If the noise persists, try to isolate which pulleys it could be remove one accessory belt at a time. It would indicate if it is a belt/pulley problem and guide you towards the problem one.

It's all the time, and gets higher in pitch at higher speeds. The noise has been there since I purchased the car 3 weeks ago. The only work I've noticed is a rebuild head. I've also replaced the valve gaskets and adjusted the valves cause she was rather noisy. Thanks for the fast replies guys. Jarrett, I asked how to diagnose the problem, poking around wont be beneficial if I don't know what to poke at and how my friend.

If you can get your hands on a mechanics stethoscope this will come in handy. If its a pully noise this will pinpoint it for sure.

^^^^ what SOHC-FTW said, more than likely a bad powersteering pump or low powersteering fluid. Sit in the car with it running (not moving) and move the steering wheel left and right. Does it whine when this is happening?

I checked the ps pump and fluid, it's not that from what I can tell. And it's more of a high pitch, almost whistle I'm hearing. Like wind noise, but I can hear it when I idle. I'm gonna squirt some wd40 in the pullies to see which one it is as stated before... Hope it's not the crank.
