I have a 1991 accord 4dr lx with the 2.2L f22a4 and the automatic transmission with the sports mode that malfunctions all the time. im aware that my TCM may be whats causing my sports mode to malfunction, im going to take that out tomorrow when i have some time and see if its fried anywhere. But would that make my car shift funny? Its done this since i bought it about 10 months ago. Foot to the floor the transmission shifts to second at about 32, third at about 45, and fourth at about 60 and it wont go past 90, i was going down hill for about a quarter of a mile, floored it at 60 as soon as the hill started, and barely touched 90. Could this be my TCM? do i need different gears? is my transmission going out? is this motor? also, i feel like my transmission isnt at its full potential. my car redlines at 6200 but wont rev past 5500. My trans will shift at about 5200 foot to the floor. but my acceleration declines at like 4k rpms. I'm new to the import scene, please excuse my noobish question! thank you!

First, let me correct a few things:
Unless you or someone else swapped that motor, your car should come equipped with an F22A1. Your engine should also redline at 6800 and not 6200, but I should hope you're not redlining the car all the time with a motor 20+ years old.
If you know your TCM is bad you need to replace that FIRST. It could be the TCM, or the transmission, or both. I would baby in the meantime with that issue. A bad transmission cracked the block on my H23 several years back.'94 JDM H22A: 178whp 146wtq

The specific tranmission model doesn't matter. I would resolve your TCM problem first. You should be able to find a TCM in a junkyard for no more than $20-$50. Fix what you know is wrong first, especially when it is so inexpensive. If you're still having problems, you're probably going to be looking for a new transmission, although somebody more knowledgeable may be able to chime in with something else.'94 JDM H22A: 178whp 146wtq

I was considering throttle was an issue, but he's complaining of the car "shifting funny". It's been forever since my car was an automatic, so I never really encountered these problems. EDIT: i cant get the wiring harness off of the TCM so i just put it back in, i jumped the little blue connector thingy next to the tcm with a wire and the only thing that happened was my check engine light came on... When you jumped the service connector, was your engine running, or was the key set to the II position? It should not be running.
I can't believe nobody asked this yet... it should have been the FIRST thing asked: is your S light flashing, or on when it shouldn't be?
The F22A4 is essentially the same as the F22A1, with a different exhaust manifold. Makes no difference to the transmission or TCU.

All sport mode does is raise your partial throttle shift points. Nothing more.
I suppose trying a new TCU would be the best option. If you can find someone else with a 90-91 that would let you borrow theirs, that would be helpful (rather than dropping money on one that may or may not be bad already... and may or may not be the source of your problem!)
As mentioned, it might be the transmission itself as well. Unfortunately, I've never even driven an automatic CB, let alone worked on one, so all my knowledge is only from what I read on these pages.
Changing your fluid with Honda MTF (nothing else, and no additives!) would also be something worth doing. It may make a difference, and if not, at least it's not a bad thing to do! Just don't have the transmission "flushed"... no power equipment pumping through it. Just drain, fill, drive a bit, and drain/fill once more (it's expensive this way, but it's the only way to ensure you get the majority of the old fluid out.)

The 5 speed conversion is covered in the Swaps section of this site. It's not a terribly difficult process, and can be done fairly cheaply as well. Our manual transmissions tend to suffer from worn synchronizers though, so you'd have to be careful what you get (or expect to rebuild THAT as well!) But I guess that's all part of owning/maintaining/repairing/modifying a car that's over 20 years old!
