ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

H22 swap and now a chipped ECU ??

Is there any advantage to installing a chipped ECU in a basically stock JDM H22?
It has a SRI, header, and an exhaust. If there is an advantage I'm not really sure what ECU to run, I am still using the IAB's and was told by someone that a P72 was the only one I could run besides my P13. I don't know enough about them so I am here asking for some help. Thanks and Be Well.

Don't listen to the idiot above.

There's not much to be gained from a tune on a near-stock H22. The P13 runs a bit rich, so you can gain some power and MPG with a good tune... but it's not really worth the expense until you at least get a cam upgrade.
A P28 can be used, though the P72 has controls for the IAB system (this can be added to the P28, but it is not equipped with it in stock form.)

The ECU will need to be tuned, so unless you know a tuner, you'll have a LOT of learning to do. A "chipped ECU" is not something you just plug in and expect to be safe. Unless you know what that ECU is programmed to do, it can do serious damage to your engine.

Thanks for the help,I've done a lot of reading on CB7TUNER and other sites and know just enough to be dangerous. There a couple of import shops that do tuning where I live and both have good reputations so I would pick one. The P13 I have is good but I 'm thinking to get ahead of the curve and getting an ECU. I would get it tuned now for the way it is and pick up some MPG and a little power and when I get cams I can then get it tuned for the cams at that time.
I found a P72 on line at HA motorsports http://www.hamotorsports.com/socketedp72.html for $269 ready for Hondata S300 or almost $800 with Hondata S300 I can do either one, so I am still researching until I am ready. I see EBAY ECU's but I'm not to sure about that.

I'd pick up a P28 from a junkyard for $50, $20 for a chipping kit, and learn how to solder. That's WAY too much money to be spending on a chipped ECU, IMO!

There are places that will sell a chipped/socketed ecu for $250-$300, and then tuning software can be free. Certainly won't cost as much as Hondata, even if you don't go with the free versions. Anyone worth a shit at tuning is going to be able to tune on crome, neptune etc.

The advantages(my opinion) to Hondata is it is far less finicky, the support is equal to what you've grown to expect from Honda, and its reliable. They sell an upgraded map sensor that works particularly well with Hondata too.

Basically, its quality stuff its just overpriced. I don't think anyone would talk shit about Hondata for any other reason than its cost.

For someone that is just tuning a mild hobby car, anything more than a chipped ECU running one of the free/inexpensive programs is a serious waste of money. The more expensive systems (Hondata being among the cheaper of that group) are more capable, but the additional capabilities are only worthwhile in the hands of someone who can and will use them. Hondata sells more products to people who will only use 30% of the functions based on their name alone.

Do your research, and get what you need. If you'll be getting the ECU tuned by a professional, the best thing to do is ask them what they're most comfortable working with. Most tuners have a preference, and you'll get the best results when you use software they know well.
