ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

New timing belt: idles fine, detonation type sound when I give it gas

    Possible causes?

you could be off a cog tooth or two, did you do a base timing check after buttoning it all up?

Depends on what you mean by that. Did I recheck all the timing marks? Yes. There were two white marks on my flywheel... was I looking for the one with another white line intersecting it?

yes did you use an ignition light gun, i think the 2 marks are the highest and lowest you can go and you want to be in the middle?? theres a post on here about timing and setting it. i mean why would it mess up if you put everything back exactly perfect using the light will help you in deducing whether or not youre off a tooth on the cam pulleys

No; I don't have a timing light. So, what if I am a tooth or two off? Can manipulation of the distributor fix that?

probably not if your cams are off from the crank. adjusting the distributor is minute in change compared to being off even one timing belt tooth youre lucky your havnt smashed the shit out of your pistons and valves

I ran everything over by hand before cranking to ensure that nothing was gonna interfere

It definitely sounds like a timing issue, no playing with the distributor will not advance or retard enough to get it right if it's off a few teeth. Invest in a timing gun i've had one that i bought when i was 15 when i started tinkering with car's and to this day i still have/use it, it's VERY handy!

kinda off topic but i just fired up a rebuilt 22re in a toyota truck, seemed like it idled fine but would miss every other second, check the timing and it was at 45 degrees! LOL

so yes, please check your ignition timing. make sure you also jump the service connector.

Just removed head cover, flywheel window plug, and spark plugs. All timing marks are lining up perfectly. How can I be a tooth off and have the timing marks line up?

Maybe I used the wrong marking on the flywheel? There's a 0(or an O), the red mark with two marks on either side, and two white marks; one short white mark and one long white mark with what appears to be a 1 intersecting it. I used the long white mark.

You are most likely off a tooth. Advanced I would say. More than one tooth and it wont idle fine. If it were on, it wouldn't be pinging.

                        Couple of notes:

                        1) You need a timing light to verify the actual timing. The distributor has enough adjustment to correct for a 1 tooth error (approximately 15*). However, this WILL NOT correct the mechanical timing problem of being 1 tooth off. I mention it because if you have to adjust the distributor all the way to one side and you barely get timing within spec, it simply confirms you are off a tooth.

                        2) since the engine sits at a 12* angle toward the rear, the timing marks will appear to be slightly off when they are actually correct, that coupled with the relatively inaccurate timing marks on the cam pulley, and the tension of the valves on the cam lobes makes it really easy for the belt to end up one tooth off, with the markings looking correct.
The OFFICIAL how to add me to your ignore list thread!

If the cars ever had a clutch job most don't put the fly wheel back on correctly. I always use the crank pulley for timing. I've had a z6 be off atleast 2 teeth and it idle and start just fine but lacked major power from the excessive retarding like it's been said invest in a timing light this is a sure fire way off checking.
