ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Starter problems and questions

I just recently got a 93 LX manual with a bad starter

Before removal, if you go so much as close to the battery post with the cable it would arch/spark like crazy.

When I took it out that problem stopped. I found the bendix was stuck in the engaged position. I took the starter to get tested and both autozone and advance said the starter was good, before I pointed out the stuck bendix. I brought it home and manually pushed the bendix back in place.

Is the stuck bendix due to the plunger in the solenoid? Or do mitsuba starters have a bendix drive in the starter motor that propels it outwards and back in?

Also, would all the arching and sparking be caused by the bendix drive being messed up, or does that mean the solenoid is bad as well?

Does my starter sound like it is repairable or should I scrap it and go for a new one?

    *edit*

Is this the solenoid for my car?

I'd get new one or re-man for possibly less headache down the road.

What would likely be the cause of issues down the road if I put a new solenoid on it? I figure that leaves just the starter motor itself right?

I hear that reman ones can be a major pain.

My dad got one from Advance for his chevy 350 and replaced it 3 times (4 starters total) before finally getting one (a new one?) from Napa.

I thought the general consensus was to stick with your original starter over a reman one if possible?

The motor seems to run fine though?

        ^^ I agree with this

and sounds like the solenoid but i would just replace all together for peace of mind.

I have reman on my LX for possibly 4 years. "0" issue. Should I consider lucky?

Dang, I thought the consensus was the rebuilds are a crapshoot.

Also it is $20 vs $120.

What would likely go wrong within the starter motor if I replace the solenoid?

If replacing the solenoid would possibly give me a few months worth of service that would make me happy. I just got this car and would like to let it sort of prove itself before I sink much cash into it.

Worn out bearings or brushes. If you are looking at 2-3 month of service out of that starter motor, $20 for solenoid may pay off. While you are changing the solenoid, clean, inspect and lube the rest of parts as needed.

My dad said he would check the brushes for me to make sure they are okay.

Although he seemed a bit leary about taking the motor itself apart because he said things have to be aligned properly and I am a little frightened to take it apart because of that.

So it sounds like a new solenoid might be a decent bet for the short haul. Especially since this car won't be a daily driver, at least right away. So it shouldn't be experiencing a lot starts every day. I also figured I would park it on a hill and just "push start" it as much as possible.

Anyone know if that link to ebay is the correct solenoid for sure

My starter says "SM402-05" but not "SM402-05N"
