ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Cleaning EGR ports: the right way

I was just cleaning my intake manifold when I noticed these EGR port holes in the same place. Now I have cleaned the EGR ports in the recent past but I never knew anything about cleaning these passages which go from the EGR system itself into the intake manifold. It pretty much defeats the purpose of cleaning the ports if you don't clean these passages too to make sure they're free to do their jobs. So I took a hangar and poked at it, then I took this pic,

To clean them best as possible and make sure they worked, I soaked them with carb cleaner first and then purple power by filling up EGR valve opening. I let it soak for 5 or 10 minutes. I did this several times and then used a water from a hose to clean it out. I made sure that I got a strong flow of water from all of the EGR openings. I did this until the cleaner stopped being black which told me it was finally clean.

Just make sure that you get a strong flow of water out of the holes. That means the system can work very proficiently now.

It was fun, you might be surprised at how much cleaner you can get it by doing this.

After 300,000 miles, mine was naaasty.

I never noticed it before. There was so much tar stuck in the passages last time I cleaned them, couldn't even see them.

Well engine degreaser probably wasn't the smartest choice i would have used carb n choke cleaner.

You have to take the intake manifold off to do this job? Or could you just leave it on and clean it?

Most people leave it on but I think to clean it the best you may wanna do what I did. Cleaning out just those little ports from the top I think doesn't do the best job. You wanna see if water/cleaner flows from the EGR valve into the holes leading to the intake chamber (see pic). The way I proscribe makes sure the holes - and even the complete system itself - is completely clean and free to do its job at 100% efficiency.

I cleaned the passages on the top and the ones in the EGR valves but individually. How long did it take you to clean off the passages? How did you know they were cleared? Any engine choke cut off while cleaning?
                  Thanks.

ive actually tried to do this before drilling the egr plugs out and it had no effect on my emissions testing.

so im not too sure if id consider this the "right" way because there's serviceable plugs for a reason.

Its the EGR (Exhaust Gas Resurculation) hole going from the egr system into the intake manifold. It where the exhaust gases go back into the combustion chamber.

Yeah, you maybe right but I think if you want it extra clean, you let it soak in some cleaner and then wash it all out.

So why would he have to clean the ports from inside the manifold, when cleaning it from up top works just fine? Unless he isnt even cleaning them from up top, meaning he can even have another clot somewhere else...

what you really need to do is take the plug out the side and run a drill bit or brush through the side. this cleans the entire passage.
