Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

1993 Honda Accord LX...Random Shut Offs

Just like the title says.... I own a 1993 Honda Accord LX with 332,000 miles on her. The car runs good ( ran good ) and is it unbelievable condition. The motor runs strong, doesnt burn oil, and has a tiny oil leak at the oil pan that I am going to fix in the near future.

The PROBLEM: Recently I will be driving my accord and all of a sudden the car will shut off. This can be while im going 25 mph or 75 mph...doesnt matter. The check engine light comes on along with the other lights on the dash. Usually my radio is on and it continues to stay on even when the car shuts off and i cruise to a stop.

I have replaced a ton of parts in the past year and a half just as a general maintenance habit and trying to get the most miles out of the car as possible. I change the oil and filer every 3k. I have replaced the Spark Plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, ac compressor, alternator belt, Main Fuel Relay, got a new key cut from Honda, distributor, cap, button, coil pack.

I have been talking to a buddy who owns a shop in NC and only works on HONDAS. He told me he thought it was the EGR Valve that needed to be cleaned. He said that it was probably filled with carbon since i mean the car does have so many miles on it. I took that off and cleaned it and to no avail the car shut off still. So i then cleaned the EGR Ports on the intake manifold. They were really clogged up with carbon. SO i cleaned them out as well as the fuel injectors and down in the spark plug tubes. Sprayed a gunk remover and used a air hose to blow it out and get all that crap and carbon out of there. Let it dry and put everything back together. Took the car out and GOT ON IT hard and i never get on it. I wanted to burn all the gunk up and clear some of the carbon out. Car felt super strong and ran clean. I was drove it home from work last night and the car shut off again.

At this point I am pretty stuck. I am about to change the radiator fluid with the Honda Spec stuff and then I am going to check the grounds and make sure everything is still good. I was also told to check or change the timing but the car idles damn near perfect. So I was hoping that SOMEBODY on this forum had some insight and maybe you have had the same exact problem and could help me.

I just know that by the time i do fix the problem this car will go to 1,000,000 miles with all the maintainence i have done on it. So if anybody has any suggestions or has had this problem before i am open for ideas as all of mine havent fixed the problem. Thanks alot.

check the (black box) on it..the one that controls your vacuum..take off the vacuum line number 16 from your egr diaphram and block it off..if your car doesnt shut off any more its the cvcc valve located in black box..................the cvcc valve controls the egr diaphram

could also be your main relay. does the car ever sit there and just crank over and not start?

After your engine die, what makes it go again?
Do you have to wait for it to cool down?
Does it restart as soon as you try?

Is it possible for you to check for spark or fuel pressure right after engine shut down?

Ive had a bad ignitor before and it would cut out for a few seconds and as long as you didnt push the clutch back in it would start running again. It would do this over and over for about a half mile before it would quit and run normal. (Only did this for two days before i had to buy an ignitor and at the time they were $150-$170 at Oreillys. Now they are $50-$65.)

If your an auto i can see it shuting off and staying off because the engine isnt still spinning once it dies. The ignitor is inside the distributor.

I agree check your main relay they can cause that, there's a DIY on here that says how to fix it or you can go to Honda and buy a new one for like 40$. Up to you

Incase you may not know the main relay sits under the dash around your left knee (depending your height lol)

            Good luck!

$40? Oreillys charged me $51 for a Master Pro one 3 days ago. Anyone else verify $40 for a Genuine Honda main relay?

x2 on the main relay after some thinking. it could be an ignitor but i would bet on a main relay first.

I had the same issue here about 5 months ago. car shut off and the radio was still on. I knew it was the main relay because on hot days i had to tap it for the car to start. I would try replacing that and hope it works. i got mine at auto zone for 55 dollars. good luck hopefully this is the problem

It could be the ignition switch too, but usually that gets worse with time. I’d check my moving the key around when it is in the on position, to see if the car will cut out/ die or not.
