Alright guys im still new to the tuner scene im interested in going turbo with my car some time in the next year. I will either be building my stock F or going the H22 route. But i was at one of the backwoods j/y's yesterday and found a "mint" 91 mazda mx-6 turbo. Motor wise everything was there turbo, intercooler, EVERTHING. Now ive read up on the DSM turbo setups but i was wondering if i could pull the turbo setup off the mazda? Im not just gonna yank it off and slap it on like i said im still about a year away from doing it but if it can be done id like to go get it and have it ready when the time comes. im not trying to put down 400+ hp but the 250-300 range would be nice. Im still doing maintanence mods on my CB to keep it reliable for years to come when i drop a turbo on. Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

Pulling Turbo off of another car...got some questions.

It sounds like you're off to a fair start. You need to make a decision as to what engine you will build on first. I'm not sure what kind of turbo the MX-6 came with so you might want to show us a picture of what it looks like, it may be too small. The 91 MX-6 only made 145hp, your car makes roughly 90% of that all motor. So I wouldn't look for much gains. However on the flip side it did make 190tq; so it would be an intriguing project. If there was a way to find the turbo map to that particular model that may give you more inclination as to how it would perform on our cars.
But before any of that transpires you need to decide on your engine, then find a manifold that would accept your proposed turbo. Then fabbing a downpipe, dumptube, etc. Good luck.'94 JDM H22A: 178whp 146wtq

depending on weather or not the turbo would work was one of the elements i was going to use to choose my motor. If i could get most of the parts off of the mazda and see considerable gains on my f block i would go that route. if the gains were not worth it i was just gonna do an h swap and go from there. im thrown off by the size of the turbo question though. sure the mazda puts out 145 hp w/ a turbo and our f series can almost do that but wouldnt adding a turbo period to our engines give us considerable gains? like i said im new and still doing research so that question might be dumb.

Well you probably can't get most of the parts. You could probably get the turbo, wastegate, and the intercooler only; if it came with one. Lines, piping, etc need to be designed for our car to work efficiently, not the Mazda's.
The size of the turbo determined output. I don't know what the wastegate is set on a Mazda, but if it's only making 145hp (meaning closer to 130whp), it's probably not set very high. But even still, how much higher could it go? Another 10psi perhaps? Turbos are only rated to make certain amounts of power. That turbo may max out at 190whp for example. You don't want to max out the turbo, that means it's running full hard all day everyday, that hurts reliability, and produces a lot of heat, which will rob you of hp.
You want a turbo that can support hopefully 100whp more than you plan to make. So try finding a turbo that can support 300-400whp. I honestly wouldn't put this on either motor, definitely not the H22. You would do better to find a turbo off of eBay and rebuild it with quality parts. All turbos are not created equal, find the one that fits your setup the best.
But with that answered, you still need to determine the engine you want. You only want 250-300 which either motor can make easily. I'm not sure of your budget, but you don't want to cheap out either way. Neither motor was designed to be turbocharged; so if you're going to do it, do it right. You will stay on the road alot longer.'94 JDM H22A: 178whp 146wtq

Will the turbo work? Probably. It may be small, and small turbos will nuke your engine real quick.
Then again, 250-300hp turbo on stock internals will nuke your engine pretty quick anyway. Upgrade your internals if you want to boost, and don't waste your money on an H22A.
The DSM manifold works on the F22A (not the H22A) because the port spacing is the same. I do not know if the Mazda has the same port spacing.

thanks for the input guys! looks like ill be leaving that setup at the junkyard. After doing my research on an mx6 forum, the stock turbo on the mazda was rated maxed at 196hp. people have beefed them up but the most ive seen out of one on the factory turbo is 256. the price i would pay to get that hp out of that turbo is rediculous and i probably could have bought a new turbo with a higher hp rating for 2x over. i think they just beefed the stock one up to keep it as original as possible. After doing a little more reasearch ive decided to keep my F rebuild with quality parts and leave the turbo out of the equation for now. im big on reliability and from what ive read turbos can be a bitch sometimes which is something i dont want to deal with untill i know my engine inside and out which takes time. THANKS FOR THE HELP!

If the turbo is that small, you'd be blowtorching your engine if you tried to max it out anyway! Small turbos make lots of heat, especially when pushed to the limit. N/A Honda engines aren't made to hold boost anyway, so even with a good setup a stock block won't last long. Use a ting blowtorch of a turbo, and you could be looking at a matter of days before something gives out.
