ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Oil Pressure

I installed a oil pressure gauge today because my light was flikering it did it before so I thought nothing but when I cold started it with the gauge the psi was 85-90 after is warmed up fully it dropped down to about 10-12 but after I let it sit there for a little while it did this:

When I hit the gas it jumps right back to 45 and up. Is this good oil pressure or not.

I'm using 5w-30 I just changed it today.

Typically low pressure limit is 10 psi at idle speed. Normal pressure is between 30 to 60 psi at normal operating rpm. Maximum is 100 psi when cold.

The needle in the photo is way too low. I would add "STP" oil treatment or similar product to improve viscosity for now.

On next oil change, I would use 10W40 or 20W50 and see how oil pressure do at idle speed in normal operating temp. If it is still too low, I would add "STP".

the real rule of thumb for oil press is 10 psi for every 1000 rpm, so
if your sitting at idle your fine man.

is your gauge electrical or mechanical?
electrical - just wires into the car.
mechanical - taps into oil and actual runs oil into the car.

electrical gauges are not accurate most the time, something to consider.

Have you tried diagnosing the flickering light? Tested the sensor?

The numbers I posted above are from a spec sheet of an engine I work for living. Unfortunately, it is not Honda. But I think Recip engines have just about the same requirements for oil pressure and such.

Depend on model of the pressure switch, they typically close circuit around 6-8 psi. In order to test functionality of the switch, you'll need a pressure gauge which is known to be accurate. That gauge and the switch must be rigged to a source of air pressure regulated from 0 psi and up. I don't think this is not so cost and time effective when replacement after market new pressure switch is around $10 or less if I remember.

The OP had original switch flickering. The new gauge installed is indicating that low. Considering these two, it is likely the pressure is low when the engine is hot and running at idle.

I would be worried about the health of the engine if it was mine.

It hasn't dropped as low as picture again It drops to maybe 7-8 at idle. I think my next oil change i'll use 10w-40 or 15w-40

If I use the oil treatment what will it raise the 5w-30 to for viscosity. Will it raise oil pressure at idle?

My Karmann Ghia's oil pressure light was flickering and used STP to stop it.
My 93LX was doing that till I used STP and later changed oil to 20W50.

I just used stp and my pressure does seem to be higher. It is closer to 12 at idle so far we'll see what happens.

It's good to see the pressure is better now. But keep in mind that there is a problem in your engine which needs to be corrected in the future. STP is buying you some time till then.
