ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Rear suspension questions

    1. I've been hearing a banging/rattling coming from the rear of my car. I've emptied everything out of my trunk and it's still happening.
    2. My car also doesn't track down the road straight. I thought it might have been my steering rack going or bad alignment.
    3. Lately, when I hit the brakes I can feeling a knock throughout the car. A single knock, and it won't do it again until I accelerate and then brake.

I took it to my local mechanic. The second he heard #1 he told me it was an issue with the shocks/struts. I explained #2 and #3, he said those are also symptoms.

So, is my local mechanic correct?

    If so:
    1. I have Monroe quick struts up front. They're about a year old.
Will putting quick struts for the rear hurt me any? I don't want to lower. Stiffer suspension would be nice, but is not anything close to a priority.
    2. Will I need an alignment? I actually just got one. I asked the mechanic and he said there was nothing to adjust in the rear.
    3. How dangerous is it to drive like this? I've gone quite a distance already, and I can't get to it until tomorrow.

A quick after thought: My local Autozone doesn't stock Monroe. They have Bilstein ranging from $100 - $130 per side. Should I get those or look elsewhere?

i think when replacing struts it is necessary to go with a good quality strut like bilstein or tokico... i say go for it!

I just realized that these aren't quick struts....
For future reference, these are the Bilsteins:

Monroe's are ok and will match your front set up too. KYB GR2's would be my choice for an OEM replacement. You definitely can't go wrong with Bilstiens or Tokiko's if you want a more performance oriented shock. I would replace the rear shocks asap. Another member on here, mitsubishiv5 had worn shocks in the rear of he cb7 which caused him to randomly spin out on the freeway. Either way i would do something ASAP.

Bilsteins are sounding good. But autozone has "Gabriel" for less than half the cost. Opinions?

Also, can I reuse my springs?
And I found a place that sells quick struts for $160ish a side. That would include the mounts.

            You can reuse the springs.

Gabriel and Monroe are less than oem quality and will be worn out in a year on stock springs, a few months on performance springs. Your best bet is Koni STR.T, they are a VERY good quality shock, a little stiffer than stock and will last a long time. I'm currently running the STR.T's on sport springs and love them!! Tirerack.com or summitracing.com should have them at good prices.

That being said, a blown shock will not change your alignment so something else in the suspension is worn out. I'd suggest finding a reputable alignment shop and see if they will just tell you what is worn or if it's out of spec. A broken spring could change alignment....is one side of your rear lower than the other?

This was an awesome post. I was about to go to Autozone to buy the Bilsteins, but then I thought to check the cost on the Konis. $80 per side vs $110ish for the Bilsteins. I ordered 2 and some misc other parts, in hopes that replacing them would solve my problem. It should all be here next week, so I'll update then.

I'm also taking your post as "Your car is aligned to your springs". In which case, I should be ok just replacing the strut, and reusing the springs, correct?

The height of the spring has more to do than anything else BUT simply taking apart the suspension, especially with all oem bushings normally changes the alignment a little just pulling it apart and putting it back together. You will want to get an alignment afterward if you want your tires to last.

The only bushings back there that are OEM are the trailing arms and the lower strut bushing.
If those need to be replaced I can do that, but I'm going to see if replacing the struts fixes it.
And I guess I'll get an alignment. THis time I'll ask for a printout (they all do that, right?) so the way I can be sure they adjusted the radius rods correctly.
When I put them back on, I just inpacted them till they looked good.
