gas mileage and RPM

I was wondering, what kind of millage SHOULD a 92 wagon with automatic/190,000 be getting? right now i'm getting barely 300 to a tank.

Next , for anyone with an automatic , what rpm is it suppose to be at at 65/70mph? Mine is way up past 3k. My 90 accord manual is nowhere near that high.

It seems the auto shifts real high/late compared to when you shift the manuals, thus maybe killing my gas millage?

Check your timing, it might be running a little too rich causing the ECU to talk to your TCU giving it the choice of higher shift points.

Sports mode: I don't think 92-93 automatics have the sports mode button on the side of Tue shifter, but when its engage your auto tranny shifts at higher rpms, are you sure your cb7 is a 92?

Another thing...is your 4 gear out?...are you driving it on D3?

True when I had my cb7 auto it would do the same thing I took it to a mechanic and he played with the timing and it was fixed! Check that out bro

I partially agree with the statements above. Gas mileage will suffer greatly if the camshaft (physical) timing is off and thus causing the ignition timing to be off as well. If your timing belt is off one tooth, you can not set your ignition timing appropriately until you reset the timing belt properly.

Any F22ax engine should get 400 miles to the tank or more, if of decent health. Otherwise something is not set properly, component not working properly or health of engine deteriorating.

FYI, my brother's 91 EX 5MT sedan still got him 27 MPG with one bent exhaust valve, fractured valve guide, worn piston rings and carboned up piston oiling ring ports. However, the engine was consuming/burning out the exhaust 1 quart every 400-450 miles. That is first hand knowledge, as I did a partial teardown and reconditioned the engine to improve its condition significantly. I still have the bent valve and fractured valve guide as examples.

ok, ill have to have a mechanic check the timing as i'm very much a noob with engines.

yes my car is a 92 and there is no sports button (although i have seen them before). but thats what it feels like, sport mode.

i use d4 and it works ( i counted the gears). it feels like it needs another gear.

I do know that the wagon with a manual has more aggressive gearing to deal with moving more weight more easily... I'd reckon that the automatic transmission would also be more aggressive in the wagon vs a sedan/coupe... maybe it's just different shift points for a wagon?

I thought the wagon transmissions had longer gears which would explain why the speedometer goes to 140 vs 130.

Based on 93 Service Manual

Automatic 4th gear: - - - - - - - - - - - - - Manual 5th gear:

Final reduction for all automatics: 4.285 (4.062 for manual coupe/sedan, 4.266 for manual wagon)

So for an LX wagon, rolling radius for a 195/60-15 tire is about 11.725 inches (860 revs/mile), 3000 rpm * 60 min/hr / .707 / 4.285 * 11.725 inches / 12 in/ft * 2 * pi / 5280 ft/mile = 69.1 mph (EX 66.8 mph) assuming the torque converter is locked up.

2500 rpm should yield about 57.6 mph (EX 55.7 mph)
3500 rpm should yield about 80.6 mph (EX 78.0 mph)


If you watched the Motor Week video on the 91 wagon, it was rated at 22/29 if I remember correctly. My wagon will get 28 or so on the highway running in the low 70's with the AC on.

The other thing to pay attention to is whether the torque converter is locking up or not; this will make a difference of about 200-300 rpm. If you start at 60 on a level road, then accelerate moderately, the lockup should disengage (200-300 rpm increase), then as you accelerate further, it should downshift to 3rd. If it doesn't do this, the lockup may not be working. Give me some specific rpm/mph readings and I may be able to figure it out.

my wagon manual revs higher at any given speed in the same gear compared with my sedan manual.

it moves a load a lot better than the sedan.

but on mine's i can tell the overdrive comes on when it wants too no TCU codes 91 SE with a MP1A

Ever since i bought it i noticed the car's auto trans acted much different then any other car i'd driven. Even in d4 , the car seems to lock itself in gear. As if d4 really was d4 instead of just drive.

You know how if you go to d3 the car will sorta lock itself into gear when coasting? Well, it does it in d4 too. Like when i take my foot off the gas in d4 , i can hear/feel the engine slowing the car down. As opposed to any other automatic car which would simply coast to a stop in a neutral like state (even though it's in drive).
