ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.
2 of 2 < >

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Has anyone ever had there axle come out of the tranny while driving?

    I did.
I was accelerating to pas a truck and I was at around 100 and I made a quick lane change and my car made a weird noise. The noise didnt last long. I got off the freeway and every thing looked good. then On my way home my car started smoking...
I noticed I was leaking ATF and it was coming out by the axle.
I was going to replace my axle seal last night and When I went to pry the axle out of the tranny it was 1/2 way out! So I put the new seal in and the axle still had its C clip so I put it back together... I saw marks on the tranny from the axle hitting it.
So something made the axle come out and go back in half way.
DO I need a new axle?
    What do I do?

Damn man your one lucky guy. I didnt even think something like this could happen without totally snapping the CV joint, if even then. I would start looking at the lower control arms and the rest of the front suspension to see if you have any damage. Something is allowing your wheel to move which is pulling out your axle. I hope you figure it out, thats a scary deal my man. And no I wouldnt put a new axle in as long as the splines are in tact and no damage has occured to it

Idk what would allow my wheel to move... All of my suspension is new. Nothing was damaged.

You said "Something is allowing your wheel to move which is pulling out your axle"
If my wheel was moving like that the cv joint would just pull apart and rip its self out of the boot before the tranny right?
There is a C clip holding it in the tranny. I wonder if the last time it was out it was not pushed in enough to let the little C clip grab.

If you think I didnt push the axle in enough the last time it was out vote "the gnomes where messing with it"

What I'm meaning is that when everything is tight and bolted up, the axle is solidly in place, it should never be able to move. So I would assume there's some play somewhere.

And I would also assume that if the clip didn't seat right last time that you would have noticed the ATF fluid leaking way sooner. I didn't put mine it right one time and when I pulled out of the driveway, the fluid poured out, it was immediately noticeable.

And yeah I noticed after i voted I clicked the wrong selection,i meant to say reuse the old one, I'm on my phone. I went back to change it but I don't think I can...

When your suspension is going up and down it is moving farther and closer from the tranny
The outer joint has no in and out movement but the inner is like big hollow cup inside with ridges for the bearings to grip. The bearings are ment to move in and out of the cup so the axle can grow and shrink in length.

Yes... from the inboard joint under the boot, not the splined section that goes in the tranny.

It would pull out of the inner joint and rip out of the boot before it would pull enough to overcome the c clip holding it in the tranny.

I am just wondering if The last time I had it out I didnt push it all the way in and the c clip didnt clip or if there is something wrong with the axle letting it come undone.
The C clip seamed to be good, It was nice and springy.

the c clip is the only thing that would cause this. it was either not pushed in all the way or you hit a bump a certain way to allow the clip to pop out

just make sure it is in all the way then give it a little pry with chisel if it comes out to effortlessly then replace the c clip

Its in all of the way Now. I checked the C clip and it looks good its not bent or anything and it grips hard so I am going to assume that I hat a bump just right or I did not push it in enough last time. .
