ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    alternator bracket came off

The first time we put eveything back together after doing the timing belt, I heard a loud clank when i was driving. I couldn't see what it was but later realized it was the front bracket that the 2 bolts go into.
Now, after the car has been sitting (see other posts if you want the story), everything is good except the alternator belt squeals like crazy.

Can I craft a makeshift bracket using some washers and replacement bolts or do I need that specific bracket? My husband thinks that it shouldn't make a difference if that bracket is there at all but I'm thinking if the bolts were in place, we could adjust the alternator better and stop the squealing belt.

I'm going to have to replace the alternator because it gets really hot now and I think some power steering fluid may have leaked in there.

    Thanks everyone!

Well for one make sure there isn't power steering fluid on the belt and/or pulley. And you need that bolt/bracket to get and keep the proper tension on the belt. I'm sure with enough enginuity you could fab one up, but you could probably get a cheap one at the junk yard and save yourself some time.

Thank you for that. I have been trying to convince my husband that the bracket is mucho important. In his line of work, he should know that! i'll try to go by a junkyard and find one.
I should have married a honda fan, I don't think I would be having this much of an issue.

I explained to him that those bolts probably work just like the one on the power steering pump or close to something like that. He never listens or maybe he's just tired of hearing about my car.

My alt. belt screamed for over a year and a half until I got off my lazy ass and tightened up the belt. You CAN get the alt. belt tight without the bracket, but it will never stay tight, it WILL get loose with only the one bolt holding it.

What is that funky bolt on the side? Does that come all the way out or is it built into the alternator itself? We were traying to take the alternator off completely but we couldn't get it to budge.
I don't mind the belt squealing but it gets hot to the touch and eventually the alternator gets hot. I don't want a fire going underneath the hood.

The alt. is only attached to the car really with a long bolt on the back which attaches it to the bracket thats bolted to the block, and the plug from the main harness. Yes the bolt/bracket attaches it to, but yours is missing. So if your bracket is gone, remove the long bolt at the back of the alt. and unplug it. Should fall out in your hands.

roger that. so the bolt that is on the right hand side and is really hard to get to if the belts are on, is that built in to the alternator? I guess will have to force the alternator off because it didn't just "fall off".

It's not "built in", it goes thru the alt. and the alt. bracket to hold the alt on. It's the pivot point for the alt. belt adjustment, the one you lost. Just loosen the bolt and pull it out, then the alt. should be free. Just double checked, the funky bolt you refer to should be directly below the adjustment bracket for the PS pump.
