ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    valve job...

hi my cousin bought a 92 honda accord and when he brought it to me the engine was making a knocking noise so i think it could be a bent valve and i would like to know is it worth it to fix it or get a new engine drop in? or is there anyway i can test if its a valve or piston job without taking the head out?
    thanks

is the knocking sound coming from the top of the engine or the bottom?

find a friend who is well versed in mechanics to listen to it.

you might be better off getting a good running used engine before tearing into this engine a finding alot more wrong with it.

Have you tried a valve adjustment? If it's a ticking sound that you are hearing, this could very well be the issue. If it is an actual knocking sound, that's usually the bottom end...

First try taking the valve cover off and inspect. The ticking sound is more likely the valves. Either way its an easy fix taking off head should not be hard at all if you know what your doing. Replace the head gasket with a new one though!

If its bottom knocking sound.........you are in for a surprise

To OP, if you do decide to do a value adjustment, make sure to do it when you haven't started the car. Most honda engines need a cold start value adjustment.

Do a compression test to see if there's damage. A bent valve will result in very low compression in a cylinder.

If a valve was bent (most likely two valves), that means it made contact with the piston, so the piston would be damaged as well. The only way that could happen is if the timing belt snapped, or somehow skipped a tooth or two. Or if the timing was replaced improperly.

            Do a compression test.
            Do a valve adjustment.

Check the manual for specs. If its coming from the bottom end, then a valve adjustment will NOT solve this. Could possilbly be a rod bearing knock or possible spun bearing, although I dont know what a spun bearing sounds like.

do u know if any previous head work has been done? like messing with the rocker arm assembly or somethin?

to be honest it kinda sounds like the rocker arms aren't hitting the valve springs properly.

That tick is the sound of an engine requiring a simple valve adjustment, no need to remove the head. Or it could be in desperate need of an oil change. The sound seems to kind of die off as the head gets warm and some more oil gets up into it.
