K heres the story. My sisters car (90 LX) for some reason starting leaking oil BAD!!! Figured out it was the cam gear seal. Took off valve cover, valve train, pulled cam and saw that two of the journals were really grooved as was the head and the cam bearing caps. funny thing is the car ran with the massive grooving. Anywho, I located a head but its an A6 head. I was wondering if I can stick the A6 head on my 93 LX and stick my A1 head on here 90 LX. I will try and get the ECU from the car the guy is pulling the head off of but if I can't, will I be fine with the A6 head and the LX ECU in my 93? I figure I will swap the heads instead of just the cams because then everything is worn together and not all mixed up. Can I also probably re-use the head gaskets and all other gaskets as long as I don't fuck them up?

Never reuse head gaskets or any gasket besides head to exhaust mani gasket.... somtimes you can reuse valve cover an throttle body gaskets. But no on the head gasket.

If you want the A6 to work to its full potential you'll need to add an iab wire to your harness and run it to the ecu. The cam intake manifold and I think valve springs are different vs the A1 head setup. The iabs will still work somewhat but not as they should, opening at the proper 4900rpms I think

I understand that the manifold and all that is different and I will see if the guy is willing to part with that stuff but if not the A1 intake should bold up to the A6 head correct? I want to eventually get the H23 intake manifold and the PT6 ECU but in the mean time will it work without all that stuff?

well I got the head and found out that one of the connecting rods was loosing its bearing and kissed the valves in one cylinder. Can I just swap the valves out of the A1 head in and lap them in? Otherwise the rest of the head is in great shape also not going to do the whole head swap with my car and her car. if it would have been an undamaged head I would have. Should I just swap all the valves or just the 4?

I beleive the only difference in the heads is the cam that is in them. You can swap all parts between the heads. The power comes from the more aggressive cam in the A6 so you should be ok swapping valves out of old into new. There is a thread somewhere that breaks down engine speacs on our cars around here an includes piston, valve, stroke ect. And yes the exhaust mani will fit but the A4 or A6 are better flowing than A1. I beleive if i have read right the best og the bunch stock was the A4 but install the one that fits the down pipe as there are two different styles. i believe its 4-2-1 on a6 an 4-2-2 on A4 meaning the mani will have one doghnut or two doghnut gaskets at the mani to downpipe connection. Hope i exsplained everything corectly an im sure someone will correct any mistakes i made lol.

Oh yeah an as for the wrecked head i just cracked a cam for same reason an cone to find out where it cracked the oil port in journal was gunked up an restricted flow. I know you said the cam seal was leaking bad but this is another option to check cause if thats clogged then its possble there is gunk clogging some other port like main bearings or somthing. Just an option though

I would just swap the cam but I read that the A6 valve springs are different than the A1 springs but does that really matter? I may swap the cams but I am going to measure the cam journals first to see if they are the same if I do it and also the camshaft caps torqued on the head to make sure that everything is the same so nothing seizes.

okay well bring this back to life but I finally got around to working on the car. I swapped all 16 valves from the 90 LX head into the 93 EX head. I do have a question about the valve stem seals. are all 16 the same or are they actually side specific cause if they are I am going to be pissed because right now I believe I have them switched. The head gasket kit that I got did not come with a listing of what it contained. All the seals were in one bag and just started throwing them on. saw that the springs on some were a different color and then looked really close and realized the SOB's were labeled. I am pretty sure I can't switch them or can I? The cam out of the EX head also is effed, a couple of the lobes are wore past the chrome plating or polishing so I am going to just find an LX or DX one.
