ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    3rd Gear Grind

My car, about two weeks ago, started grind into third. I think it may be the synchro. Any temporary fixes. How much in both terms of labor and money will it be to replace a synchro? Its a 93 accord Lx manual. I hope just changing the trans oil with a thicker viscosity will alleviate the problem.

Yes, the synchro. If it won't stay in 3rd, it'd be the gear.

I was pretty certain it was a synchro. Any body replaced one yourselves?

IIRC there is a temp solution by putting syncromesh in or some other trans fluid - BUT it puts more stress on the rest of the tranny. I just bought 3rd gear and syncros for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for $250 and did it myself (not a bad job at all just to do 1, 2, and 3) the only problem is that it is a special order part that takes over a week to get....

you can do 4th and 5th but you need bearing pullers and presses.

If you are mechanically inclined, I would say do it, but add a clutch to the job since you'll have it pulled apart.

Quite honestly I am bit intimidated by the thought of such an endeavor. Never really done something that extensive. Guess its time to learn.

Basically, you gotta pull the transmission. A typical shop would pull a transmission and put a new one in (if you bought one yourself), for about 250-300 bucks. So just think, that money to pull and put back in + taking the transmission apart to replace the synchros. But like Tru said, if it's out of the car and taken apart.. might as well slam a clutch kit in it also, since it's already out.

As mentioned, change the fluid. GM Synchromesh works very well, as does the new Honda synthetic MTF. It won't fix anything, though... but it might help for a little while.

Replacing synchros takes a full transmission teardown. Not something the average amateur would usually want to attempt. It's also quite expensive to have done professionally. It'd be cheaper to find another transmission... though all of these transmissions tend to have synchro issues at one point or another, so you may end up with a grinding gear in the new one as well!

Get a new transmission, and if you want to learn how to rebuild the one you have, a rebuild kit isn't terribly expensive. Pick up a Helm manual, study it, buy what you need (tools and parts) and go to town!

I will probably go to try and find a trans and just drop it in. As for the helm manual, here i come amazon.
