ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Newbie w/ Main Relay Problem

Hey guys im newbie to the forum and hondas. I just bought a 1990 EX 4dr 5-speed and im getting it ready so i can put tags on it and daily drive it. I read up on how to fix Main Relay because after I bought the car it started acting up, go figure. So what exactly do I solder? All the connections on top or certain ones? I need to fix this problem quick cause its getting pretty annoying pulling this relay in and out. Thanks.

Are you SURE it's the main relay? Everyone seems to blame any no-start issues on the main relay, and that is not always the case. If you crank the car and you're getting fuel, your main relay is fine. They usually fail in hot weather...

Anyway, to see what solder joints are bad, you'll need magnification. It's hard to see them with the naked eye, unless they're REALLY bad. To be safe, you could always desolder and resolder every point. If you don't know how to do such things on electronics boards, then be prepared to go buy a new main relay. It's worth trying, but you may not succeed if you don't have the right tools and experience.

Before you do that, though... make SURE it's a fuel issue, and not a spark issue that is causing your car not to start. If the problems you are experiencing aren't involving a no-start, then the problem is definitely NOT your main relay.

Well it seems when I take the relay out of the car and go out the next day and put it back in the car starts right up. When I turn the car off and try to restart, nothing, it just cranks. Its like the only way it will start is if the relay is out and I wait a day. I think I might just order the one off EBAY for $35.

You can hear/feel if the main relay is bad. The main relay makes 3 clicks when it is working fine.

1st click when the ignition is turned to on
2nd click when the CEL on the dash goes off
3rd click when you turn the key to start the car

Most of the time when the relay is bad, the first 2 clicks will work but the 3rd will not.

You can listen very carefully or put your hand on the relay to hear/feel the clicks.
You will probably need someone to help you turning the key because you will not be able to have your head under the dash to listen for the clicks or reach the relay with your hand and turn the key at the same time.

Well I checked the relay the way you said and it only clicked once so I ordered a new one.

I got my new main relay the other day and the car fired right up. I hope this one lasts a long time.

A new one from Honda will typically last you a very long time! I changed mine out at 120K and am now at 165K trouble free! Enjoy

A new one should last you another 20 years... as the old one did.

I just resoldered all the connections. Only a few were separated, but better off just refreshing all the connections. All those repaired relays are still running strong.
