engine wont start how do i kno if its fuel or spark?

Yo, my car wont start, how do i determine if its the fuel or spark thats needed? i dont want to spend money on parts that didnt need to be changed

To check for spark, pull a spark plug boot out, slip a screwdriver into it, then rest it so the screwdriver shaft almost touches bare metal. Have someone crank the car and watch for spark.

To check for fuel, I believe we have a bleeder you can open on the fuel rail. I'd cover it with a rag when you open it to avoid spray if it is getting fuel.


I'd advise buying a Haynes manual and maybe a book on the basics of automotive repair.

Another way to check for fuel is to pull the wire for the ignition coil, pull out a spark plug, and crank the engine briefly. If you're getting fuel, you'll smell it from that spark plug hole. (you pull the coil wire so the car doesn't start on 3 cylinders...)

It's nice to see someone with the sense to check for spark or fuel FIRST... so many people will just start blindly throwing parts at the car and wasting money. That's a lesson I learned the hard way myself!
