ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Custom Wiring Harness?

My wiring seems very rigid and junky. There is so much electrical tape it makes me want to rip all the wires out and burn them. So, I could go the route of a new or used in decent shape stock harness, however I've been thinking about it and I kinda like the thought of having it less clunky and lighter with custom wiring. I'm pretty sure I could figure this out through schematics and such as I've had electronics training from the Navy, however I thought I might ask here to see if anyone has or knows someone who has rewired their CB completely.

I'm looking to find out how many circuits I would need to keep it simple as possible. Keep in mind I'm pulling the a/c so I have no need for that. All I need is the engine, dizzy, ecu, sensors, dash, audio, cig lighter, head/tail/fog lights(minus center brake light), heater/blower, then power windows/locks. I have plenty of splicing/soldering experience and I'm sure I could probably figure it out on my own just by getting schematics and finding out what each wire requires. The only issue I'm thinking I might run into would be the ecu, however I'm sure I could overcome that too with a good study of the inputs/outputs.

I just wondered if anyone had any advice on this to make it easier/quicker for me if I decide to go through with it. It may not be much weight, but it wouldn't hurt to lose it, and it wouldn't hurt to simplify the wiring and make electrical issues easier to troubleshoot. At least for me since I wired it.

I'm about to do this on my 3rd gen prelude with f22a1 swap actually. I'm ordering 2:1 heatshrink and braided nylon sleeving in bulk. I'm going to de-loom everything and take out the wires I don't need; leftover auto tranny plugs, a/c wires, etc. Its basically going to be a DIY poor man's rywire harness. Same idea, just no shiny firewall connector and no DR-25.

My advice? Get a precision screwdriver set to de-pin connectors. Leave pigtails to solder, since you can't buy new pins in small quantities. Solder everything, don't just use butt connectors. Label everything with masking tape so you know where its all supposed to go before it gets loomed.

Well, I'm kinda poor myself, so I'm just in the preliminary stages of figuring out what I will do. I guess I'll check out the free chiltons and look around for full wiring diagrams and detailed schematics. I've got so many plans and so little money. LOL

        I'm buying these materials:

        1/4" heatshrink, 100ft - $28.88
        3/4" heatshrink, 50ft - $25.00
        1/4" sleeving, 100ft - $27.00
        3/4" sleeving, 50ft - $30.00

Those are the sizes Peter at rywire told me they use. Thats about 110 dollars total, but 100ft of 1/4 inch is a shit ton of heatshrink, so myself and 2 friends are splitting the cost. That should wire 3 cars pretty easily....so its really not that expensive if you do it like that.

If you're even poorer than that, I suggest carefully taking the stock loom off, modifying what you need to, then re-using it. Instead of heatshrink just use a ton of rolls of electrical tape.

Whatever you do, I would make it a priority to make sure nothing bad grounds out, and make sure the harness is waterproof.

Your wiring, or the OEM wiring?
OEM wiring is not junky, If your wiring is bad - Then fix it.

Best advice seriously - Add connectors / plugs whereever you can - It makes life 10x easier when you have to fix a problem, or replace a part.

Building a whole loom is possible, but it's really not worth the effort, just fix the problems with yours properly.

If at first you don't succeed, Try again. Don't give up too easily, persistance pays off in the end.

When I said "my wiring" I meant the OEM in my CB. If I did the wiring it wouldn't be so hard to move around and get the plugs to line up and connect. Nor would I have rolls and rolls of electrical tape on top of the tubing and under the tubing and everywhere you can think to put it. The guy before me wrapped the steering wheel in electrical tape just to give you an idea what I'm talking about when I say WAY TOO MUCH electrical tape. He taped things that had no business being taped. or were already protected with shrink wrap and plastic tubing etc.

I just printed every schematic from Chiltons for the 91 accord that apply to my model. Going to study them and decide what I'll do later on. I'm going to have my complete interior out and half my bay cleared out so I figured why not give it a consideration. I still have about a month or so to get her on the road. Seeing how I have all day to work on it and almost all night at work to do research and formulate budgets(I'm at work now LOL.) I'm going to take it step by step and knock everything I can out in one timeframe.

I'm cleaning the bay out while I wait for parts to come in too as well as scraping the interior sound proofing and converting the rack to manual. I have quite a long list of things to keep me busy. Including taking pics and documenting steps on just about everything in case I write a DIY on a particular thing I'm doing. But she's going to be right when I'm done with her. Then of course there are the other things I have planned once she's driving while looking or after getting a better paying job. I've gone mad with CB7 fever!!!

Hey man, I understand what your trying to do, I've personally done it in three seperate occasions. If you are doing it for weight, negligable. I mean seriously so. I cut MAYBE 5 pounds in wiring, fuse boxes, etc. I understand the black tape thing though.. That shit sucks. If you've got time to kill, best way to do it is to sit down with a few hilighters, different colors, and the schematic. Use one for don't need, one for might and one for keep. Then pull the dash, and the whole harness. When you do, use masking tape and a sharpie to label everything that you disconnect. De-loom and untape everything, get rid of all the wires you need to get rid of, then... This may sound strange... Hook everything back up. De-loomed. Naked. Exposed. Tape small bands of tape around everything every two inches or so. Take special care wherever wires split from the main loom. Then take the whole harness back off, and tape everything with the best electrical tape you can afford. Overlap half way, no shortcuts. Tape the entire harness. It will take MANY rolls. Do not try to depin and heatshrink, it's retarded, it takes WEEKS! You will mix up pins. Fires will ensue. It is a good thought, but ask anyone who has actually done it, and they will tell you forget it. Now that you have the entire harness taped, buy some "liquid electrical tape" or some rubberized undercoating. Yea, you see where this is going. After masking the connectors (undercoating) lay the harness on the floor on some newspaper and go to town. You are now waterproof. That is the goal here. If using the liquid tape, just paint it over all of your taping. That's it. Put it back in, step back, and admire your new streamlined harness. Good luck. Patience, and the lord.. J/k.
