It has nothing at all to do with compression.
Also, the air in the engine bay is not considerably warmer than the air in the fenderwell while the car is in motion. The only time you're sucking in "hot" engine bay air is when your car is sitting at idle for an extended period of time.
I paid $200 for an AEM CAI back when I was new to the game. Cut a hole in my car to fit it through... a hole that is now terribly rusty. If I could do it again, I would DEFINITELY get a short ram.
Whatever you get, be sure to use a quality filter. The cheapie ebay short ram intakes are fine for the pipe, but the filters are awful, and won't keep dirt out of your engine. Invest in a good filter from AEM or K&N.
