Would a F20 work?

Hey guys, kinda new to this but I have a question. I have a 91 CB7, automatic (yeah i know lame...). The engine is a F22A1? I'm not really sure...(kinda new to this whole thing). But anyway...my friends been telling me to swap it for a F20 from a 98 - 02 DOHC VTec Blue top from a JDM accord. He showed me a site that has this and it comes with an automatic transmission too. I'm not really good with stick shift, but i really love my CB7 and it's engine is slowly going. I was wondering should i follow my friends advice or should I try something else? Any advice would be nice, my accord is my first car, and i love it a lot. I don't ever wanna part with it.

Before you seek changing your engine due to necessity (as your current engine is "slowly going"), confirm that your engine is indeed nearing the end or at the end of its life (and irrepairable to a point its rivaling a swap). Otherwise you are spending unecessarily.

What makes you think the engine is dying? How many miles has it travelled? These engines are near bullet proof (provided they haven't been abused, neglected or suffered an unfortunate accident eg. human error in timing belt change etc) even with over 200,000 miles.

However if you must change your engine to the F20B I have seen some CB7 and some members here that have actually done this conversion so it certainly is possible for your CB7. It's a path taken by a number of owners seeking a performance upgrade (in the natural aspirated route).

However this conversion would cost more (especially as it's an engine that was not OEM factory fitted). If you have the budget then this certainly is an option. Just confirm with your state's pollution authority that a mod of this nature will qualify (not defected).

If budget is tight then i suggest sticking to the F22A series (then boosting later when the budget is there).

Seriously though a F22 has enough go for a daily driver. The fast and furious route will only lead to alot of $$$ spending, abuse of your CB7, loss of economy, reliability and never ending mods to get bragging rights. Only to be disappointment as there is another CB7 (another car with more mods) or a newer car that goes faster with less mods making your car look like a try hard.

The F20B swap is fairly common around here. However, being OBD2, it's more work to swap than an engine that was made before 1996.

Your best bet would be an H22A. 200hp, and easy to drop in. Get a 92-95 model, and it's even easier.

Finally... there are MANY engine distributors. I would stay away from any in Canada, since you're from the US (HI makes it even more of a big deal.) Many of those cheap Canadian importers sell crap engines to people in the US. Partially because they source them very cheaply, in bulk, and don't take the time to check them... and partially because they are selling internationally. If they steal your money and send you a broken engine, there's not much you can do about it, other than angry phone calls, nasty letters, and bashing them on the internet.

www.hmotorsonline.com is the place you want to go. They are based in California, and have a spotless reputation. They sell quality, and if something does go wrong, they will fix it.







Or, as JDMdriver said... just fix up that F22A and keep it going. It has amazing potential.

Thanks guys. Well, like i said, I'm a noob so yeah...but then again, idk if my friend knows as much about cars as he thinks he does.

Anyway, JDMDriver, i think I'll go with your advice and keep the F22 that is already in it. She has about 180XXX miles on her, and an old lady owned her before she gave it to me. I'm not quiet sure about the history of this engine (as in routine maintenance), but I have seen this car a few times near my neighbor hood running.

My only question now is...where do I start?

So far as I know, there was a gasoline leak at one of the injectors due to a cracking O-ring and a dead battery. Tested the battery and yeah need a new one for sure, and for the gasoline smell, i checked around as the engine was running (after jump starting it of course). Found that one of the injectors was leaking. I finally had some free time to check it thoroughly and removed the whole fuel rail for a better look. Here's what they look like after i pulled them out.

I am just thinking of replacing them all. Does that sound stupid?

Yeah I'll stick with the F22 until it's her time, then I guess rebuild? But your contribution to my question is much appreciated. As mentioned earlier, I am just a newbie, and I really love this car so I wanna do whatever I can to keep her running, even after I stop. Anyways thanks!

Not stupid at all. The first thing you should do is restore the engine. Replace all seals, sensors, worn components... don't start looking for performance until you bring it back to at least somewhere near original health! I see far too many people start slapping performance parts on ailing engines, only to have them blow up on them.

Haha yeah I know what you mean. Yeah, I'm just trying to get her back to her healthy self again. The last time I got to drive her, even with the leaking fuel injector (a lot of gasoline could be smelt), i only drove her a few blocks to move her to my house (cuz just paid the original owner and took it home), I could feel how much potential the engine still had. So i want to bring that out before I start enhancing her.

So, seals, sensors, and all worn out stuff is where I should start? Alright. Thanks for the tip!

Definitely. Well, for the engine anyway.
Refreshing the suspension will do wonders. Also, be sure to change the transmission fluid (use only Honda fluid.)

If the problem is just the leak (not performance) then no need to replace them all.

Just fix the o ring that is leaking. Actually fix all the O'rings (since the others may start to leak also).

A quick look at the Net shows you can actually buy just the O'rings themselves.

And perhaps Honda Dealers may also sell them.

I would try replacing the seals first (since its just a couple of bucks each). If you must change the injectors as an assembly you can look at the JY for a non leaky set or purchase new from one of the sites above or even Tas Auto.

keeping the motor sohc is great and going to f20b is great. either one will keep u satisfied. I had a mild build on the sohc and it did not disappoint at all. now with the f20b, it's a totally different power band. but as stated before, it may cost a little more money to make this engine work with obd1 stuff. but if you keep the injectors and rail, and do a conversion, it will save you some money too. but converting the injectors and map sensors (assuming you using the f20b t body) will require more than just swapping the motors.
to save with al the research and headaches, stay single cam and have fun with it. you can never go wrong with a h22. any way you do it, good luck.

Replaced

I ended up buy a set of brand new injectors for each cylinder, cost me just under $200. I installed them and checked. She works fine now, only problem I'm having now I dead battery. Haha, oh well, I'm getting that on my next paycheck.

I have run into another problem though, anyone know how to treat rust? There are about 4 rust spots on the roof of my CB7 and i guess the previous owner solved it by just covering it with duct tape. I took off the tape and saw that there is now holes, all near the top of the windshield...is this a do it myself kind of thing or should I seek professional help?

sorry to interrupt guys, but my motor has already done 392000 and it still is good, i never have had trouble with it,,, i only spend a little amount every month and its smooth. two days back i went to see a honda accord 1996 for sale with F20B n the cosmetic was great, but the engine was totally ruined, so i cancelled of buying that and m holding on to my cb7

Yeah, I've decided to keep the original engine in her, just trying to get her lively again though at this point.
