Replacing it with a straight pipe frees up a small amount of power, but not enough to justify the negative aspects. 1-2hp are not worth the noise, smell, toxic fumes, and illegality. Even if your state does not test for emissions, a cat is required by federal law in the US... so if a cop wanted to look under your car, he could nail you for it.
My friend has a straight pipe that he usues for the track. He installs it, drives to the track, races, drives home, and puts the cat back on either that night or the next morning. That's the only way I'd condone it. "for track use only".
