A/T won't shift out of park

My 90 Accord EX is stuck in park unless the shift lock release is pushed. I'm not sure exactly where the problem is, but it shifts fine once I get it out of park. I just changed the throttle sensor, is it possible that I messed something up there that would prevent it from shifting? It was working fine before I changed the TPS, so I thought maybe it was something related. Any help that you can provide would be great!

are you pressing the brake in than pressing the button and shifting into gear?

      if so

it could also be your shift cable is bound and you will need a new one.

i had the same problem my car was very hard to shift out of park but once in gear it was fine. than a couple weeks later i couldnt get it in any gear. changed the shift cable and its goes through gears like butter
You don't have to like what he did, but I would hope that you can appreciate the time, money and love that went in to the build. If you can't, you're not really an enthusiast, just another dumb kid with a car.-visualpoet

blazedealh91, which fuse would affect this part? I checked the horn fuse, which is what some say the problem is, and the brake lights still go on, so it's still registering when I'm pressing the brakes, but it could be a different fuse.
Also, where on the brake pedal assembly is the brake switch located?
        Thanks!

Hey, I checked it, and it does click when I press the brakes, so I guess it's not that. It's really puzzling because I didn't have any problems with it, and it was just setting for a couple days while I was working on it, but then when I went to move it, it just didn't shift. I checked the fuses that I thought might have some electric connection close to it that it might be routed through (ECU, horn stop, radio/clock), and they were all good.

The one problem with buckysaccord93's theory is that the car doesn't shift out of park at all without manually disabling the shift lock. It's not just shifting hard. I opened the center console, but I couldn't get the probllem pinpointed (the part that should be moving still moves smoothly when manualy moved, but it just doesn't do anything when the brake is pressed). I'm wondering if it is possibly a short somewhere, but I have no idea where to start to figure out where.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, except it didn't take a couple weeks. It finally bound up at a gas station in the middle of nowhere, Iowa on a Sunday morning, on the way to a summer job.

Anyway, the other symptom is that the lever has more resistance than usual. I actually preferred it that way, it wasn't excessive. But it should be very, very light.

Why the shift lock override mitigates the stuck cable, I don't really understand. But it did.

did you check the shift lock solenoid to see if it was working properly? Other than just moving it with your hand. Unplug it and apply power and ground to the corresponding connector to see if it fully retracts. If it does than it is something electrical.

Ok, so I did some more testing, and I think I have it narrowed down to one of two parts. I tested the shift solenoids, and they both work fine. The fuses are all good (I think - the horn and brake lights both work fine, and I think those are the fuses that could affect it). The transmission fluid is nice and pink, and the brake switch is fine (the brake lights come on when pressed). So it's either the shift lock solenoid or the shift cable. I checked the shift lock solenoid, and it didn't do anything when I connected it to power (the wires sparked though). It also could be the shift cable. I read somewhere that putting oil down the shift cable pipe could help loosen it up a bit, and I tried that, and it did loosen it up (the gears now shift really easily). So I'm not sure exactly which one of these, but I'm kinda thinking that it's probably the shift lock solenoid. If anybody else has a better idea based on this information, let me know, cause it would be really nice to know a better solution before I go and spend the money on the parts. Thanks for all the help you have given already!
