    Car is Jerking

ok so today i spent like 7 hours working on my car. i changed the EGR plugs and since i had the fuel rail off i changed all the o-rings on the fuel injectors. also i changed my vss because it was broken. so after putting everything back together the car did not start at first b/c no fuel in the fuel rail. so on the 2nd or 3rd try it started. it is idling very low though. and when i drove it around the block the car jerked pretty hard a couple times between 2k and
3k rpms. it did not do it just once either. at first i remembered i forgot to reconnect a vacuum line and the pcv valve. i stopped and did that but it did not seem to help. i also had a little trouble getting the fuel rail back on but i think i got it down tightly. also the odometer does not work. i thought the vss would have fixed that but it did not. when the car started to jerk i would push in the clutch and it would stop. it did it mostly in 2nd gear but i dont think i got past 3rd gear. i drove it only a mile or so. any ideas?

i did the egr port cleaning just like the DIY said. i had some tubing laying around that was very good it fit right inside the plug holes and i vacuumed everything i could get out. then just for good measure i sprayed a little carb cleaner in there and barely got any more carbon out. so i think i did a good job cleaning them. i looked in there with a flashlight after i vacuumed and it looked pretty clear.

honestly i am way too tired to go check for fuel leaks right now. also my garage lighting is not that good and its still like 100+ outside. i will certainly check tomorrow morning. i was posting now to maybe get some ideas about what might possibly be wrong.

i actually think someone stole my haynes out of my car. i cant find it now. i was going to check that but i could not find it today so i didnt even have it as a reference when i did the work.

thanks for posting wed3k. you pretty much always post in my threads and i really appreciate it.

lol, actually i dont think egr functions without a VSS input. have you pulled the egr valve off?

i think with vss working (maybe both odo and vss were broken?) the egr is trying to distribute. unplug the egr and see if there is a hesistation or do a WOT run through 2k to 3k. there shouldnt be any hesistation.

you probably know better than me but i just thought the vss controlled only the speedometer and odometer. i did not take off the egr valve i just cleaned the ports. and yes the odometer has been broken since i got the car but never threw any code until the speedometer stopped working. i was not getting the lagging/bogging that i was getting before so i think cleaning the ports fixed that. it was just the car jerking really hard that is the problem.

edit: went to drive it again this morning and i had a CEL code 14. since i cant find my haynes idk which code that is. i tried searching the site because i know there is a chart of all th CEL codes but i couldnt find it. will search it again.

2nd edit: ok so like a donkey i overlooked the part that said diagnose CEL. so code 14 is IACV. i did not touch that and doesnt it only control the idle? this is so weird. idk whats going on with my car. someone knowledgeable please help!!!

well being the genius that i am when i was reconnecting my iacv last evening i apperantly bent the lower prong up into the top prong. so both were going into the top connector. so after pulling it off and spraying it out again and bending the pin back correctly i think i fixed the problem. keep your fingers crossed

OK, so it seems you corrected the bogging with EGR port cleaning. Great job, you're getting your hands dirty and learning. Props to you.

So you made a mistake or were not careful in doing the job, but you fixed the IACV problem which caused jerkiness. Live and learn man, just be more careful later. I do think that was your problem and it is fixed.

Only problem left is odometer not working. You mentioned you replaced the VSS, but did you replace the ENTIRE assembly? The VSS has the electrical connector part on top, but the bottom body goes into the tranny. You should replace the ENTIRE thing with a known working unit.

So do that and report back. Also, check wiring going into the VSS, make sure that is secure and not damaged.

Any other mechanical issues with your car? Sounds like you're getting there with the fixes. Sweet!

yes sir i am excited. it has been one thing after another with this car. glad to say its running well at least for the time being. the problem with the iacv i think i hit it with a combo wrench when i was unscrewing the fuel rail.

as far as the vss goes. i just bought an ebay part. it was just the piece with the connector and the little thing that spins around inside. i replaced both those pieces. the speedometer works great now but the odometer is still busted. the vss was actually way more of a pain in the butt than i thought it would be. i had to remove that linkage for the tranny and it was a bit of a hassle. i was getting so frustrated i almost started throwing tools then my roommate came and helped me. now that i think about i bet i do need the bottom body part. i bet that is shot too.

ill hit up the junk yard probably tomorrow. i went to 1 today just for s and g and found an inside door handed i needed but that was about it.

as far as mechanical issues go there are none that i can think of. i know i need to replace my front motor mount though it has a crack in it. and my steering wheel is slightly tilted to the left when i am driving straight. it could probably use an allignment too.

thanks for all your help cisco! you are the man! i cant wait to see that car!!
