ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

    Ringing noise from engine bay?

Just did a TB job and am hearing a ringing noise from the engine bay. I think it's coming from the TB side. Do bearings make this noise when they're about to fail? It's a loud ringing like you just left a concert.

When you say you did a TB job, do you mean you removed it and put it back on to clean it or something?? A tb that's not sealing tight against the intake manifold would cause sounds like you describe (tone will change depending on how bad it's leaking).

A leaking sound can range from hissing sound (no noticeable change in engine idle speed, a somewhat minor leak) to more of a constant whooshing sound with the engine idling higher than normal.

My V2 intake used to whistle really loud, and started doing that out of knowhere. But I agree with YK86, might be a bad TB gasket.

Well I am gonna asume you are refering tb job as meaning timing belt job and not throttle body job. It sounds like you tensioner is improperly tensioned or is going out. Did you replace it?

Ps might want to be more specific on "tb job too"

Ah....now that makes a bit more sense.....totally thought tb = throttlebody.
If we're in a thread talking about timing belts, then tb is fine but it would be better for everyone to be a bit more clearer.

If it didn't make the sound before doing the timing belt, I would say something went wrong during the install. Like mentioned, the tensioner was probably installed wrong (not hinged on the tab or not tensioned properly). It may even be one of the drive belts for the alt/ac/ps pump being too tight.

Yea sorry should've been more clear. TB = timing belt.

I didn't replace the tensioners because they felt fine when I took them off and spun them. I installed everything the same as it was before -TB tensioner hinged on tab, etc. Tensioned as described in the Helms.

I'm hoping it's my PS or ALT because that would be a much easier fix. What's the best way to measure the tension on these belts? I don't have a tension gauge so I kinda eyeballed the deflection at an estimated 22lb. Def not the most accurate way to tension them but is there a better way? I tensioned to the 'new belt' specs in the Helms. 1/4"ish for the ALT and 1/2"ish for the PS if I remember correctly. Both at 22lbs-ish.

With engine off, remove alternator belt and power steering belt from car. Now start car and see if noise is still there. I'm gonna say it will be, in which case you need to find out what is going on. I would say remove upper and lower covers for the timing belt then see what is going on.

I loosened the tension on the ALT and PS belts and the ringing is still there. I'll prob end up taking the TB covers off but I'm trying to drive the car to the beach this weekend so I was hoping it's a quick fix.

Here's a vid of the noise I'm hearing. It fades in and out. Sounds loudest near the fuel rail... I think.

                  Bump.

Because the ringing is intermittent does that mean I can rule out a pulley/tensioner bearing? I would think it'd be a constant noise if it was a bearing.

Also the sound continues a little after I shut the car off. It stops when the intake makes that whooshing/vacuum sound.

you might just have a cracked vaccum fitting
i had mine break and when i went to a mechanic to help me figure it out, he showed me that the fitting that connects to the top of the valve cover was busted so i replaced it and the noise stopped. i cant hear it in the video but as my car would shut off it would fade away slowly.
