car wont start now after doing this work!!

so i did the valve replacement in this thread yesterday

everything was going fine until i was retightening the rocker assembly. i ended up breaking 5 bolts while torquing them down. they were old and just sheered. i didnt have a tool to get them out so i just left the broken parts in.

i also did not have time to do the valve adjustments. so we just bolted the valve cover back on and reattached everything and she fired up fine. it smoked a lot because of the oil that leaked into the combustion chamber from removing the spark plugs (which were in great shape).

also i think i might have had piston 1 at TDC on the exhaust stroke maybe? the car was really sluggish when i pushed on the gas. my girl was watching the flywheel and she never saw the TDC mark. so we put a straw in the piston and did it that way. she started fine yesterday when i took her over to her friends place. and when i brought her back to my place last night but this morning was a problem.

please help me i have no clue whats going on with my car!!!!

Seriously, you need to fix these problems. Those bolts are all there for a reason, five broken ones is just asking for something to break.

You already know what's wrong with the car.

You need to replace the broken bolts (assuming that you haven't screwed up the valve train with the uneven torque now being applied to it).

You also have to get it back in correct time and adjust the valves.

You cannot continue to operate the car with five broken bolts in the valvetrain. It will eventually cause it to break even worse, possibly damaging the rest of the engine.

I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I'm telling you that what you did wrong needs to be repaired. What more do you want to know?

sorry if i was rude.

it may need more work than that. im told it could need as little as a new rocker assembly or as much as a new engine. maybe just a head swap.

actually i did not realise how many bolts i snapped. the only ones that were not snapped were 17 18 3 6 9 12 i believe. i think i may have had the rocker slightly misaligned when i put it back on and that caused the bolts to sheer as they were not being torqued down straight but slightly crooked.

idk exactly how to assess the damage though.

Unfortunately, the only way to assess the damage is to repair it all or take it to a shop. Chances are that you just need to do the repairs, you'd probably be aware of it if you'd done damage by now.

Fix these issues, and then come back for more help if it's still not running right.

chances are that with the uneven presser fr0m the br0kin b0lts.its p0sable he snapped the camshaft and w0re 0ut the j0rnals.s0 0dds are he is pr0bally g0nna need a new head.

if the car ran, i doubt he snapped the cam. take the rocker back off and the bolts usually come out. if not then they will need to be drilled out and the m6x1.0 are really hard to drill.

Well, I apologize. You're right. I am a jackass. However, I am a jackass who knows better than to start a motor with several of the bolts that hold the thing together snapped-off. So what does that make you? I seriously doubt that you started this thread expecting not to be flamed. To most people, when one bolt snaps off, it's cause to stop, try and assess what went wrong, maybe ask a few questions, figure something out, etc. No one here can save you from yourself.

Anyway, look at it as an opportunity to make some tough decisions on where to take it from here. You could replace the motor with another F, an H, a K, or just start over. Good luck to you, you are definitely gonna need it. One thing I do suggest is to do more research and ask some questions regarding things you should watch out for when you attempt a job such as this. I hope you have learned something valuable here.

sorry about my last post. it was out of line. i suppose you are right about a lot of things

it looks to me like a cracked head. potentially way more wrong who knows. so it looks like i will need at least a new head. probably a new engine. a 25-35k mile japanese
F22A is like $1k shipped. i need to find a place to install it though. dont think i need to try an engine swap right now

From looking at the pictures, it doesn't look too bad other than normal wear to the cam lobes. Get the broken bolts out and replace them so you have all of the required bolts. Trying to secure the rocker assembly without the proper torque load is never a good idea. Honda engineers put that specific number of bolts for a very good reason, to even the load across the entire assembly and keep the rockers from lifting instead of fully opening the valves.

so you broke 5 out of the 10 or 12 head bolts/studs while torqueing the head back down? did you use a torque wrench and check the specs for what torque they need to be tightened to? alot of times those bolts stretch and don't fit after you pull the head off so you should really have put all new bolts in it..
