    Engine Noise

My engine is making noise and I can figure it out and it is just driving me crazy....

It only happens between 2500 and 3500 rpm sitting still or if I push down on the clutch in this range it sounds like something is rattling on the driver side of the motor, outside of that range it sounds and shifts perfectly normal.

Its hard to describe the sound that it makes. All I can really tell at this moment is that at on the highway at about 70 maybe 75 I can hear something spinning in a way it isn't supposed to, and also the rattling noise when I engage the clutch between 2500 and
    3500 rpm.

Any ideas as to what the problem is?
    Thanks

As far as the rattling noise to me it sounds like it could be the throw out bearing..... Have you recently had a clutch job done? Its very important that an OEM throw out bearing is used, or nothing but problems!!

I've had the car since feb, and I haven't done anything to the clutch so I have no clue when or what parts were used when the clutch was replaced.

Throw out bearing does sound like it could be something worth looking into.

Does it sound like a rattling can or chain sound?

Does the sound become audible when going up a hill or a car park ramp?

Does the sound go away or die down when your cruising and or when the throttle is released?

I have this same problem on my automatic 1993 SE and I hope you can troubleshoot this problem for me. The sound for me becomes audible when I gas the pedal passed 20-30% or so. If I get up to speed and don't have to gas as much I can't hear it. It's like a faint jingling chain sound-- hard to explain. At first I thought it was my heat shield from my cat cause it was all mangled and loose. Well I took that off and now the problem still persists. I also thought to try running injector cleaner many times... idk. It's definitely in the engine bay somewhere... thanks in advance.

Well, there are two different sounds (if they are connected, I have no clue) but here is the breakdown

The rattling sound that happens between 2500 and 3500 sounds more like a can rather than a chain, but it doesn't really sound like a can, don't ask me how I cam up with this, but it sounds like a flat piece of metal, kinda like the heat shield around the car, but I've already checked that and it seems to be just fine.

The sound when I shift is just throwing me for a loop, I was thinking about the throw out bearing and it and that just doesn't make a lot of sense. If it was that bearing, wouldn't the noise be coming from the transmission (passenger side)?

                  This is my experience people.

When you put a load on your car (acceleration or going up a hill, towing etc) and hear the faint chinging sound (under load) it is due to your timing belt.

Belive me or not this is my experience and my assessment of your problem.

It is caused by a slight slack on your timing belt.

I had this problem solved by having my timing belt retightened (albeit on my CRX - still a Honda and still belt driven so in my opinion still applicable). But caution when you do this as you WILL become COMPLACENT and will sit on it.

                  Read on....

I retightened my belt and the engine became quiet again (both in idle and under load) sounded more solid and made me smile everything was ok without anything replaced. In hind sight however the slack on the belt existed due to the belt becoming fatigued with age and unable to keep its shape.

As i became complacent i kept using the car until ..... have a guess..... the belt BROKE!!!

My diagnosis is your belt is OLD. Either you havent replaced it since acquiring the vehicle or it has been a while since it has been replaced. Remember it should be replace RELIGIOUSLY within the last 100,000km or 62,140 miles.

If you fall in this category i suggest change it within the next 2 to 4 months as it is nearing its time. FAILING to fork out for a new belt can mean lead to engine FAILURE. Leading to a chain reaction of forking out for a whole new engine with labour costs to remove and replace (more than a belt change) with bigger down time etc etc.

Doing what i did (retightening) will most certainly lead to a disaster... as out of hearing = out of mind. Be happy its pestering you as you are being reminded and hopefully get annoyed till you do the right thing and get a major service done (incl water pump, front seal etc)

Let me know if you are in this category, any comments or results after your timing belt change (hope not retightening)

I just got the car 2 months ago and have spent most of my time and $ on fixing the suspension. I have no clue of when the last time the timing belt was replaced.

I am already aware that the front seal needs to be replaced, I was going to have the timing belt and the water pump replaced anyway when I took it to get that done (since its going to be half ripped apart anyway, why not?)

I would never have guessed that it would make noise like that though.

Took the car in to the shop today and got an estimate for the repairs, to replace the front crank seal, timing belt, water pump, tensioners, and oil pan gasket comes to about $1000.

Hopefully it will be done tomorrow, and nothing else is wrong

Got the car back from the shop today and it has a long list of repairs done, including:

                          Front crank seal
                          Timing belt
                          tensioners
                          water pump
                          oil pan gasket
                          harmonic balancer
                          oil sending unit
oil cap (broke off into the valve cover)

all together it was about $1100

the car is running like a dream so far, nice and strong.
