NEED HELP WITH Timing belt and Balance

    Hi,
I work for a restoration shop in NJ, and one of the guys in the neighborhood brought by his 90 accord because he couldn't get it started. Apparently the water pump seized, and the pulley shattered. I believe its an f22A engine. Im going to be honest I know about American V8's and Ive done a timing belt on the 2.3 ford, but this Honda is confusing me. I got it all apart to today the balancer bolt was a nightmare but I think you guys all know that lol. I have the cam lined up, the 2 bars on the cam gear are lined up even with the head, and the balancer was at TDC when I took all the covers off. The problem I have is the 2nd smaller belt I guess goes to the balance shaft. It was mangled and is most likely out of time, How do I line that up to get it timed right. From what I read online there a bolt hole some where on the block that you put a bolt in and some how it helps you set it? I know you can just take the shaft out but its a customers car so I cant just make that decision. I'd like to go in there tomorrow and finish this car up for the poor guy, please help me out.

    Cb7 timing belt procedure linky

This video is from an f23a from an accord 98-02, but its identical to the f22a...

I suggest either search next time or either go threw the stickies...

EDIT: I recommend that you don't install the balancer shaft belt, you get a little more ponies from the engine and higher rpm's if you remove that belt.....

I forgot to mention mine is single over head cam not double, is it the same thing just with 1 cam less to time? I was reading the one sticky about the timing belts on here but I just wasnt sure bout the 1 shaft. Can you leave the balance shaft belt off I keep hearing it turns the oil pump then I hear it doesnt. Is there a definitive answer for that?

I watched the video but Im still stuck, nothing is timed right in my engine so using white out wont work. I understand lining up all the marks its just that rear balance shaft I'm unsure of. All the pics I see they say you remove some plug on the engine and stick a bolt in it for alignment. But what I want to know is does it have only one notch that you can lock into or is the bolt more for just locking the balance shaft in place so it doesn't move until you're done putting the belt back on. Also where is that hole that the bolt would go through.

the oil pump is driven directly off the crank, by a gear behind the oil pump housing. The only real drawback to leaving the belt off (had mine off for a lil while) is that it vibrates just a lil more at idle. as far as i know, there's nothing that will happen to the engine if you leave that belt off. Just make sure that the pulley that goes over the crank snout is left in there, and also the tensioner pulley, they will act as spacers so everything else lines up and tightens correctly

Edit: you dont have to use the bolt method, there's a mark to line up on the rear shaft, just like the front one... if you look closely, you'll see a mark (cant remember if it's a dot or small line) on the housing behind the pulley. there's also a dot on the pulley, and a corresponding notch in the copper colored spacer just behind the pulley... just line those two up, and you're good to go it should be at around the 4 to 5 o'clock position when lined up...

Very cool thank you that takes a lot off my mind, I got a bi-day because of the snow the parts store didn't get me the belt kit, should have it tomorrow. By the way my plastic timing cover was ground up smooth so I have no marks on it. Apparently the blancer rubbed a hole in it. The car is kind of bastardized a few people have been in it before including someone who "rebuilt" the motor. I saw the timing pulley on the crank has a spoke in the center that says up, the key way on the crank is turned a little to my right almost like at the 12:30 position I'm guessing because of the tilt on the motor. I looked behind the pully and there's a dot I aligned it with that. Is that the right spot? Im amazed at all the little differences on this engine in comparison to others.

you have the crank lined up correctly... The "up" mark on the cam is a lil misleading, because instead of pointing straight up relative to the ground, it'll be a lil off to the right as well because the engine is tilted to the rear of the car just a bit. if you look closely, you'll see two notches in the cam gear at 9 and 3 o'clock, those line up with the surface of the head. The notches are your actual timing marks, the "up" is there to keep you from being 180 degrees off... I understand your situation, i was there a couple months ago when i first got my car. Been working on cars for a long time, but every engine is different, and i'd never had to time an accord engine before, lol.... also once you get it timed, and the tensioner set, turn the engine over by hand a couple times (these engines spin counter-clockwise) just to make sure you're able to line all the marks back up, this is a cheap way to save an engine... you wont damage anything if it's not timed right this way, but as soon as you hit the starter, there's no turning back, lol...

That's good to hear, once you get a couple Honda timing belt jobs under your belt they go alot quicker and you'll know how to do just about any Honda timing belt job they're all so similar.
