ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

Rear and front engine seal leak

so i took the car for an oil change, the person whom i took it to said that there is an oil leak from the rear seal and the front seal. My question is, is it a real hard and expensive job to get it replaced? what kind of ball park figure i am looking at? or can it be done by myself?

If he's talking about the rear main seal, the transmission, clutch and flywheel have to come off to get to it. If you are not mechanically sound then doing it yourself might not be the best idea. The front seal is fairly easy, you just take off the pulley belts, remove the crank pulley, pull the old seal out and put on the new one.

They are easy to do, even easier with the motor out of the car, to change the front main seal you have to remove tranny, clutch and flywheel. To remove the rear you have to remove the pulley, timing cover, crank gear. You'll need a special picking tool to get the seals out also while you're at it might as well do the balancer shaft seal. As or the cost of seals I got them for $16 for all seals.

I paid someone to do this on my eclipse because I did not have another car to go to work in and didn't have the time or tools either. I bought a kit with all of the gasktes for the top end and everything else that would be taken out and parts and labor all together cost me around 375 to have it done.

thanks man, thats what i was looking for. Oh well, another whole pay cheque goes toward my car

In btw, here is the stupid thing.. the car oil change was done last year.. plus i have been using it since last 4 months.. and the oil was a little bit low when i took it to the service center.. so i mean, does this work need very urgent attention?

          thanks everyone for your replies!

Yeah you need to get it taken of as soon as you can afford it. Until that can happen though just keep a close eye on your oil level. Pretty much before you leave the house with it you need to check the oil and it probably wouldn't hurt to keep a quart or two with you in the car just in case. Eventually it's going to result in catastrophe though.

Thanks man, i went to the mechanic, he gave me an estimate of 400$.. i will prolly get done all the seals and also all the mounts as well, while it is out. Is there anything else you guys can recommend?

$400, honestly, is a very fair price. I HATE taking my transmission off! I'd gladly pay that to have it done!

Really, though... the job isn't all that difficult. It's time consuming, and there's a lot involved... but there's nothing really hard about it. It all makes sense the way things are put together. As long as you mark all your bolts, torque everything properly, and take your time, it's not something you can't do yourself. If you have another car to drive, and a place to work, I'd say give it a shot.

As for mounts... you have options. You could pay for new aftermarket mounts, which are ok. You could fill your old mounts with polyurethane, which will make them stiffer. It will help put power to the ground, but you'll get increased vibration inside the car (if this car is a "nice" car, and not a performance toy, you might not want that). Or you could invest in the ESP mount kit. All brand new mounts with urethane inserts. Very high quality stuff, and ESP's prices are reasonable. They're normal tuner guys like us, not some big-name corporation that doesn't understand us!

It's funny how the front and rear main seals are on the sides of the engine. Old longitudinally-mounted RWD terminology there!

Just look at everything that will be taken apart and replace all of the seals for everything along with anything else you can think of. If you're looking at swapping in a different clutch in the near future you might as well go ahead and get it now. The labor costs will be the same wether your mechanic puts in new parts or the old ones so you might want to look into what you can upgrade while everything is apart.

thanks bro, i will look into different kind of mounts that are available here, it is my daily driver though so i dont know if polyurethane would be a good idea. But i will check it out, and thanks once again!

That would be a torque converter.
