    Disconnect IACV car dies

Hello, I was tryin to set my base idle by following HondaFan81's sticky post.
Well, sure enough when I disconnect the IACV, my car dies.
In the sticky it says if when you disconnect the Idle Air Control Valve the car dies, this tells you that you have a vacuum leak somewhere.

How to check for vacuum leaks?

I checked what hoses I could by disconnecting both ends, plugging one end, and sucking on the other. The 4 or 5 hoses I checked, were all good, and did not collapse. None of the hoses look damaged or worn/cracked at all.

I heard mention of carbeurator cleaner and spraying it around in the engine bay til I hear an increase in revs...I was wondering if there was another way, or if there was a common hose to go bad. Or even one that is very hard to see that most people overlook.

Need to set my base idle speed, So I can set my ignition timing, So hopefully I can get some response out of this bad boy! Right now its like a slug climbing a saltblock. Seems to do best at 3000-4000 RPM, below that it is very sputtery and above that it gains RPM very slow.

I would just post one line and wait for replies but people tend to think that the poster doesnt do enough research or hasnt tried hard enough to deserve help, which is understandable....Oddly enough the one liners seem to get more response then my rambling.

Trying to provide any information that could help to figure out my problem.

Edit: I just purchased the car and replaced the head, the old one had bent valves. Everything was done by the book, but this IACV issue is gettin the best of me!

My Fast Idle Thermal Valve works.

Are vacuum leaks the only cause of my engine dying when unplugging IACV?

      Getting carbeurator(sp?) cleaner tomorrow.

a vacuum leak will not make it die. It wil just stick at a constant/erratic idle.

Although I am having the same problem with this car I am working. on.

the sticky for setting base idle speed says if your car dies when you disconnect IACV that you have a vacuum leak...

I cant set my base idle at 600 cause my car dies when i unhook IACV

turning the idle screw with the iacv plugged in seems to do nothing as far as changing my rpm

if the car dies when you unplug the iacv your idle is set too low. A vacuum leak would make idle go up...unless someone reset the idle with the leak occuring...still though...I would think the leak would keep the motor runnin'

start the car and let it warm up, run until the fans kick on once...keep your a/c off.

Then, with it plugged in, start the car...unscrew the idle screw 1/4 turn, unplug, keep doing this until it runs with the iacv unplugged.

Once it is running, keep the iacv unplugged, unscrew until the car idles at 500-600rpms.

Plug the iacv in, mess with the screw until it idles at around 700-900 with the iacv plugged in...shouldn't be much screwing with the screw though if you set it to 500-600 with the iacv unplugged.

Might have to d/c the neg battery term to clear the code if you have one...may clear itself with key off...I forget.

Even when I unscrew the idle screw all the way out the car dies when I unhook IACV..

Do I need to jump the service connector to adjust my idle? Like when doing ignition timing?

removing your 7.5amp backup fuse is how to reset the computer...

HondaFan81 has me convinced I have a vacuum leak from his writeup on how to adjust the idle....

How the f*** can something so simple turn into something so complicated...
                CCW raises rpm
                CW lowers rpm
Simple enough, but not in my case.

I sprayed carb cleaner in the engine bay following the vacuum hoses and never was there a difference in RPM. (Surge from the methanol injection)

When IACV is hooked up it seems to idle about right....1100 rpms or so cold, and probably 650 when warmed up.

Edit: Again, HondaFan81 has lead me to believe it is a vacuum leak, even though everyone else and all the obvious things say that no, it isnt a vacuum leak...Cause I checked my hoses and sprayed cleaner on/around em. I don't know what it is, I am just saying why I originally said vacuum leak was the cause. It says specifically in his writeup on base idle.

Thanks to all that take their time to reply. <3 H

Same thing used to happen to my F22, car would die when unplugging IACV. I didn't have a vacuum leak, just had to adjust the idle screw. Have you removed the IACV and cleaned the screen? Not sure if that helps you, but worth a try if you havn't already done it.

with the screw all the way out and the iacv unplugged it dies...that makes it seem like it isn't getting enough air to me.

unplug your egr valve does it still die?

Would a bad throttle position sensor cuase irratic idle ? If so, does it throw a code ?
