ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

I guess it all depends on your time VS money ratio. If you have more money than time, then do it.

Remember, TIME IS MONEY. Right now I am unemployed, so I have more time than money. Of course I am a cheapskate, so I try to do everything myself to save as much money as possible for more parts.

Just wait until you have time to do it. I'd rather do it myself and keep the money than be out of pocket 150 bucks for something you could do for free.

compress it as far as you can, put a big blanket over the setup and face the top of the strut away.

now straddle the spring/strut combo like it's your bitch. now loosen the 12mm? nut and watch the top hat fly off.

just becareful though, it might take your eye out.

i never compress the spring. i just have someone stand on the side of the spring and wrap a towel at the end but i mostly have the top hat facing a wall or some sort.. first time is a little scary. lol

I used my massive girth to compress the spring as my friends tied a nylon dog leash around it. Not suggested... but it worked.

If the compressor doesn't work, get another compressor that does.

$150 isn't bad... but it IS an easy enough job to do. I wouldn't say an hour... especially for your first time. You DO NOT want to rush suspension work. I'd say 4-5 hours maybe.

You can take two wheels with the tires on them and put it between them to absorb the shock. That's what they did in Honda tuning anyways lol. I've never done any suspension work so idk.

There are two seriously dangerous parts to taking apart the spring/shock assembly. The top nut can shoot off like a bullet, and can easily cause serious injury, or damage to property (glass will break, metal will dent... the thing shoots off with the force of a .22... enough to do damage at close range) And the spring itself can fly up. Not with as much force as the nut, but the spring is quite heavy. If that hits you in the face, you could end up with something broken. The blanket is a good idea. I aimed mine into a trash can. No matter what, you have to be VERY careful.

Isn't there a spring compressor that would fit to make this safer? You can borrow them from Auto Zone if you pay the deposit but do they have one to fit a CB?

Yes. I've used them plenty of times. (just not the first time)

the autozone strut spring compressors are an absolute pain to get in between the coils of our stock springs when they're compressed (well, the front at least) i ended up putting the strut and spring assembly on the ground, stepping on the spring with the top hat pointed at a wall, and just using an impact wrench to blast the nut off of the top. worked out just fine.
