So a few days ago my car started to produce a clicking sound coming from the front passenger side wheel well, so I thought "CV joint, damnit" The noise got worse day by day and on today I'm experiencing a loss of torque and slightly jerky acceleration (?) I finally had the time to jack it up today and get a look at things. The axles look fine, new almost (no tears or grease and they're very clean) , but my lower ball joints are the oldest, driest, ugliest things I have ever seen. do you think that its my ball joints making all of the ruckus? I always thought that the "click clunk click clunk" was the tell tail sign of a bad CV joint. And the noticeable loss of torque and jerky accelerationg???? The sound is only present when the car is in motion during a left hand turn; No sound while it is in the air. Could this be a whole mess of different problems all happening at once? I'm scratching my head on this one. Any help would be cool. I searched around for a bit, but I couldn't find anything that was spot on, especially with the loss of torque and jerky acceleration.

Just picked up a new axle at advanced auto, fairly inexpensive. Plan on getting to work on sunday. Think I should be okay to drive it easy for a few days, or should I bus it to work tomorrow and saturday? In the past 12 or so years I've been pretty lucky and only had 1 CV joint problem, which wasn't nearly as bad as this one...hence the dumb questions. Just wondering if it'll be okay for a day or two if I don't push it hard.

probably it's fine for a couple days but there are no guarantees when a cv joint begins failing like this. With the "click click click" type of failure it is more predictable and it doesn't strain the tranny. This pulsing kind of failure is different and I am guessing it's your inner cv joint, not the outer, that has gone bad and in general the cv joints are deteriorating fast since it went right from clicking on to binding and pulsating.
Take the bus is my advice unless it's a *major* pain in the ass. Or pull out the work light and replace the axle after work tonight.
Save your advance auto receipt for the next time it dies, they will replace the part for free if you have your receipt.
PS the lower ball joints are not making the ruckus. You might want to think about switching them out in the near future though. Maybe you could do one along with your CV axle. Or if you're not geared up for the job put it off till later.Last edited by batever; 09-18-2009, 02:04 PM.

Yeah, I just hitched a ride to be on the safe side. Also, it was pay day today, so I ran down and picked up the drivers side axle and both lower ball joints so she can be tip top by sunday.
if there's any chance you won't put in the new lbj,. then make sure to use a method of separating the lower ball joint from the knuckle that won't wreck the old ball joint boot. i.e., use a method other than a pickle fork.
