Shifter won't budge

5spd. Shifter moves fine when the car is off. When i start the car, the shifter wont budge at all. With the car off i can put it in gear, push clutch in, start it, but then shifter will be stuck in whatever gear it was in.

Check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Then try bleeding it. If it's still ok, then you are looking at either a clutch master cylinder or a slave cylinder.

its already been bled and the fluid level is fine. From what people are telling me, the throw out bearing could be off the shift fork. I'm still looking into it.

if its either of those, he will not have clutch PEDAL. it will be stuck to the floor. i agree with the shift fork might being off

would the gears still engage when the car is off, even with the fork off?

yes, the clutch fork only actuates the clutch. the shifter cables are a completely different system.


either the shifter fork is off, or your clutch is completely dead. does the starter try to move the car (or bog down and click) if you try to start it in gear?

nope, starts perfectly fine in gear as long as teh clutch is pushed in

When I was doing some T.S. on my accord I found that I could shift 1-3 clutchless with the front tires off the ground (on Jack stands). Just a possible troubleshooting tip.

Other wise I have had honda clutch plates break the springs and then pieces of them get stuck and prevent the clutch from ever disengaging. I have also seen engine mounts brake and put too much tension on shift cables when the engine is running (not allowing engagement).

So i was reading that if the throw out bearing was installed correctly, then i should be able to engage gears with out pressing in the clutch? Can someone verify that?

So how do you know it's not fucked up then? I don't mean a bad install, I mean a fucked clutch disc.


Try rev matching. Start the car in nuetral, then rev match every gear, in and out.
