ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

    brake dilemma..

so im changing my stock rotors on my akebono 92 sedan lx and i strip two of the outer hub bolts, size 14mm. the way i see it is i have four options.

    1. try to find a machine who will remove the two bolts from my hub and rotor assembly then tow the car to a shop to have the hub pressed on then tow back to my house so i can finish. maybe new bearings?

    2. tow the car to a shop so they can remove the bolts and replace new rotors and pads there and press the hub, which may be more expensive due to a brake shop not having required machinery. maybe new bearings?

    3. buy a new hub and have a shop just install the new hub, rotors, pads. maybe new bearings?

    4. buy the ts auto roh conversion and go from there. http://tasauto.com/Product/Browse.aspx?d=1601&p=2 (third item down on right side frame.)

any and all opinions are welcome.

    thanks.
    Mike.

I would go for the TAS kit. If you're going to have to put forth a buttload of effort and possibly money to fix the problem, might as well upgrade! Plus, it'll avoid the problem in the future.

oh yeah in the future, use a 1/2 drive 6pt 14mm, rather than a 12 pt, when trying to remove those 4 outside hub bolts. i learned my lesson real quick.

Yeah, best not to ever use a 12 point unless a the bolt head is 12 point (and there are very few of those on our cars...)

I need to stock up on 6 point 10mm and 14mm sockets... I keep losing mine, and I think I've already stolen all of my friends' sockets (and lost them too... )

find a prelude with the same both pattern.(very possible and easy to find in junk yards) and ROH...must machine down hubs for bearings to fit...check my sig..
New paint job and bumper 8/8/11
                  tsx retrofit
                  f22b dohc boosted
                  custom gauges pods

                    a) Try using an Irwin Bolt-Grip on it.

                    b) or if you have access to a welder weld a length of 3/8 inch pipe onto the bolt heads then use a vise grip or plumbing wrench to torque it off

                    c) if you can get at it with an air chisel then air chisel the bolt head in a counterclockwise direction to loosen it. should work.

man i'm having the same problem as you did lol. i rounded off 2 of those bolts on my driver side then i ripped the piston boot on my passenger side caliper.

i was thinking... why don't i just use this as an excuse to upgrade to ROH.

can you take a bunch of pictures when you do the conversion? because i'll probably end up doing this too.

[EDIT-OOPS I just saw that the OP is going ahead with the Rotor over Hub conversion, so this comment of mine is not helpful. I'll leave it up though in case it is helpful to someone in the future. Good luck with your brake work, OP!--batever]

Well the TAS kit costs some cash.

Try this: keep your Hub over Rotor setup and :

                          Option one:

Go to home depot and buy 3 8 foot lengths of 2x4 and some framing nails or decking screws, and some wood glue--total less than $15

If you don't have one, buy a hand saw or get a cheapie circular saw.

Go to the auto parts place and buy a 3 ton bottle jack for $20.

Build a wooden machine press with it. Search on the web, you'll see a couple designs.

Press your rotors off with your press. Total cost: under $50.

                          2) Alternatively, do like others do and just screw really long 10mm dia bolts into the back of the hub assembly and hammer on them to remove the hub from the rotor. It works for a lot of people, so I've heard.

When I do my front rotors next year I'm going to use one of these methods.

tip--keep a couple of cold beers on hand (no more!), it makes it more fun.
