    Killing power steering pumps. Help?

So, I've been through 4 power steering pumps in the past month.
My OEM one, then 2 re-man pumps from CSK (O'reilly), and then finally another OEM one. But it wasn't brand new.

I've tried everything, I tried changing fluids, ATF, Honda PS fluid, and i pumped all the old stuff out with every pump change.

And every single time, i get a terrible whine, and the pump doesn't work. It sounds like a berring, but it comes from the back of the pump, like bracket side, not the belt side. And it feels as if the pump doesn't work right away, when i first start to turn, it feels like i have no PS, then about 2 seconds later, it starts to work....kind of.

    any ideas?

Sure your not doing the belt up too tight?
Could be a blockage in the system causing the pump to run much harder than normal.
P/S pumps are fairly easy to rebuild. Have you pulled one of your faulty ones apart, to actually see what the problem is?

i'd have to go w/ evil demon 01 on this...if youve been through a good amount of pumps, especially an oem one. sounds like the belt might be over-tightened cause the pump to overwork and fail..

that crossed my mind, at one point, and i loosened the belt, but this was after it had already starting making noise. (about 3 seconds after starting)

and i only have 2 pumps right now, one is a reman that has to go back to CSK so i can get my 80 dollars back. and the other is a different oem one that i havent tried yet. i made the thread so i wouldn't mess up another good pump. lol

did you fill the system as much as possible before turning the car on? Then add more ASAP after turning it on? I've seen pumps fry pretty quick because folks didn't put enough fluid in before starting...you have to pretty much overfill it on first start.

BTW...it is cheaper to rebuild the pump yourself I'm sure then buying all these re manned units. And since you had this issue with two OEM pumps (old or not) though I can't blame poor rebuilds from auto store.

I've run my p/s pump pretty low, and it doesn't whine...this is really odd. Maybe add a p/s pump filter in line

How's the fluid look after it's been running? Any leaks?

My power steering was just doing this. It was making a growling noise, I checked the fluid level, on the outside it looked fine, but it looked low when I looked inside the reservoir. I went ahead and added more fluid, started my car, the growling stopped. I turned the wheel from stop to stop just to bleed the system, put the cap on, no issues.

Mine looked foamy as well, it was caused from air in the line.

mine foams too...but I have a leak in one of my lines...somewhere...and a leaky rack.

You've changed the fluid and the pump but it still looks brown?

                  yes
i think its due to having atf in it at one point. so the red from that mixing with the Honda PS fluid.

I second the idea that you should take one of these pumps apart yourself to try to get a handle on what's going on.

the ps pump is just a mechanical pump so I'm wondering what air in the lines could do to cause it to fail. It's possible that the ATF fluid is incompatible with the seals (though really that seems somewhat unlikely to me--how different could ATF be? Although is *is* different, and maybe some of the additives are incompatible with the power steering seals) and in that case I'd consider totally evacuating the system and refilling it with power steering fluid. Probably you'd have to fit a new feed with a reservoir of new fluid onto the top of the pump, then put a container under the old feed, then turn the engine over for like a second and check the reservoir levels, or turn the thing by hand with the belt off. (you don't to let a huge air bubble in when you don't have to). Oh, I just reread your post, sounds like you did that.

                    Hope you figure it out.

As to the foaminess, you've got air coming in your system from the leaking power steering rack, or from a leak in the lines. The most that should do is decrease the performance of the pump because the air will compress instead of providing hydraulic assist to the power steering rack.
