How many MPG should I be getting?

In my Accord I was getting around 30mpg redlining it alot. I don't have any idea how people get such low mileage with an F22. Maybe it's the extra weight? like audio, bigger wheels, heavy passengers(no offense), all these things add up! Also just a dirty air filter makes a huge difference.

I just took a nice long trip in my 93 EX and noticed while driving only highway driving I'm getting 24 MPG with A/C on should it be this low? I have only done a couple of things to the car I have 17 inch rims with new tires, I also changed whole exhaust system old one had a leaks and ruseted out. So now I have no name header and everything else is magnaflow. What could I change to get more miles to the gallon.

Note that you have 17 inch rims; stock is 15 inch. I am going to assume that your overall tire circumference is also slightly larger than the stock tire circumference even if you are using low profile tires, so you are getting your nominal 24 mph times * your actual tire circumference divided by the stock wheel circumference. So your nominal 24 mph is probably well understating the actual mileage. Also your speedo is probably understating your actual speed, good to know to avoid getting tickets etc.

i do mix driving in streets and highway traffic with 15" wheels, only weigh 155lb and stock audio. I also clean my air filter every two oil changes, that gives me a 1mpg boost for 3 months lol. I guess I'll try to change my fuel filter.

how are you computing your mpg? I run a full tank and when my gas light comes on I fill it back up and divide how many miles I did on the previous tank by how much gas I just put into it, which is usually 13.8-14.

For best mpg you want to be at the lowest practicable rpm (highest gear) for a given speed; the engine will tend to want to stall below 1000 rpms, so generally 1200-2000 will give you the best mpg in practice, though at 1200 you will not be able to accellerate well so you'll need to downshift when you want to accellerate strongly.

You will get much better acceleration at 3000 rpm than at 2000, and much better accelleration at 2000 than at 1200. I think our engines tend to peak in their acceleration around 4500 rpms. You pay for extra accleleration power (engine torque) because it uses more fuel to create that power. than it does to just putt putt along at 1200 rpms.

Incidentally, if you do happen to be below say 1500 rpms, it's my understanding that it's not good for the engine to attempt to accelerate hard as it puts a lot of stress on the main journal bearings. YOu need to downshift if you are going to want to suddenly accelerate from 1200 rpms, so you can be in the 2000-3000 range.

Accelerating at 4500 rpms is a kick but I reserve it for special occasions.

how do you get such bad milage with an F? i can get around 30mpg mixed driving with my H and i dont baby it all the time, but i sure dont tach out in every gear.

A clean EACV filter (info in the DIY) will help as well.

I'll take a look at my tires later and run both of them through a tire calculator and see how it comes out.

At first blush though (using p185/70/r15 as a comparison tire), it appears that any difference between the tire circumference is accounting for less than 2% of a difference in speed or mph.

You might want to look at stuff like cleaning out your egr valve, checking your timing, and doing basic tuneup stuff like new dist cap, plugs, and new air filter.

i think if your getting 24-28 in town city driving that's good and 27-35 on the freeway that's normal.

the highest i got on my last trip was 40.2MPG, i usually do an average of 38mpg or so. but that's all freeway driving. an i stick it at 65mph.

keep the car in tune, tire pressure up, light on the gas and keep a good attitude while driving
do that and i guarantee you'll see a difference in millage!

ex automatics have shorter gears, at least the top gear and don't get very good mileage

my 93 ex coupe gets 21-23 in the city and about 27-29 on the highway if I keep it around 60-70, however with 3 passengers, their luggage, AC on, and cruising at 80ish I get about 21-23 highway

on my 93 EX Coupe when I had the F22A6, I was getting about 30 highway w/ the A/C on cruising at about 80. Got as high as 32 one time. But I had all the bolt ons and 17s w/ 215/45r17 tires. I was also lowered so that may help w/ aero drag.

Thanks guys for all your help. I will start by cleaning the EACV filter ,cleaning throttle body, and EGR this week. As for tune up and tire pressures tune up was just done and tires are new and checked before vacation and are perfect.

oh yeah I forgot to mention, I pumped up my tires to about 5-10% below max, the super-high pressure makes the ride rougher but increased my mileage by a considerable amount, maybe 10-15%, or 3-4 mpg, more than any other change/modification I made to my cb, and best part is it was free!

stock pressure recommended is like 28 and I had mine at about 45psi

the most I ever got in my CB was 31mpg, all highway. 40 mpg is very impressive. Do you have any modifications on your F22?

none, just a good tune and just kept up the maintenance. keeping the speed to a minimum is also good.
