ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

a 10mm deep well socket... it's 4 main nuts that hold it down, and one bolt on the front right corner (standing infront of your car) that holds the ground wire on... be careful crankin it back down... those nuts only go to about 16in lbs or you'll snap a stud

You have to pull the plug wires. It should come off easily. It's just a cover... aside from keeping the valves covered and keeping the oil it, it has no other function. It doesn't have to put up with extreme heat, pressure, or any other sort of force.

And it's valVe cover... not value. Since you've mistyped it twice, I can only assume that you don't know what it's called... and it's always a good idea to know the names of the parts you're working on!

Stretch if you haven't done it yet it's really really simple. Just be careful not dust or anything gets in while it's off. Other than that there shouldn't be anything to worry about don't stretch or spread your new gasket, just lay it out over the groove. It'll fit perfectly.

I have to bonk my valve cover with the end of a 2x4 to get it to release from the gasket when I do mine--it kind of sticks there until it's dislodged.

those nuts only go to about 16in lbs or you'll snap a stud
Torque spec for the valve cover bolts is actually 108 inch pounds or 9 foot pounds--check the sticky at the top of the posts if you want to double check me. That means, a force of 9 lbs pressing on a lever 1 foot away from the ratchet head, or 18 lbs pressing 6 inches away, or 36 pounds 3 inches away. It's really not a lot of force. Ifyou don't have a torque wrench to measure what force you're applying, what you can do is hold your ratchet way up at the head with your hand "around" the head (with fingers on both sides of it) so you don't have a lot of leverage and won't be able to grossly overtorque anything using one hand. Also holding your ratchet like this you will be physically unable to snap a stud.

Also, tighten those bolts on in stages. Get all 4 of them seated, then do like 1 turn of each bolt, then another turn of each bolt...Not sure how many turns total will be right but hold that ratchet up by the head and when it starts to get harder to turn it more you should be around the right force. Remember, all you're trying to do here is to clamp on the gasket tight enough and evenly enough that it doesn't let oil out while the engine is running, nothing more.

Do you mean WILL taking it off and replacing the gasket resolve the oil on the plug?

No it wont, you need to replace the spark plug tube gaskets/seals. There are two sets of tube gaskets, upper and lower, either one can be the culprit to oil being in the spark plug tubes.

Lower tube seals part number 91301-PT0-003
Upper tube seals part number 12342-PT0-000

If you pull the valve cover off at least replace the upper ones, the lower ones require you to remove the rocker arm assembly...

No, what frootloops said is correct, you'll need to replace the upper and lower spark plug seals to fix that.

Given all that is going on with your car (lost 3 or 4 qts of oil in 2 hours driving and an overnight sit) , if you are just trying to fix the oil on that plug, rather than fix that first or even mess with the valve cover gasket I would do a compression test of your engine to make sure it's worth doing the work on. If the compression is good, then it would be worth replacing the rear main oil seal and do the upper and lower seals on the spark plugs. If the compression is bad, just go with a new engine.

Or, if the engine is running strong you could skip the compression test. But I would do it. You can rent the compression tester at autozone (you have to "buy" the rental tool from them, then return it and get your money back).
