i was wondering if any one can tell me what horsepower gains i will get by adding cold air intake,heade and exhaust to my 92 dx f22a1 thank you

It depends on the condition of the motor, what size piping you use, how well the car runs to begin with. You are probably looking at 5 - 15 whp.

well the intake wont really do anything for hp just add a little throttle response if any hp comes out of it id say less then 5 and the exaust well be about 5 to 6 hp and header most company claim to add about 12 to 15 so in the end youll add about 10 to 20 more hp with these add ons but you never know you could end up with more then that.

An intake will make a difference, anything you do to increase the airflow in and out of the engine will increase hp. You will not see 12 to 15 hp out of just a header, (probably not even out of the bisimoto header, uness you PnP your head first) you might see a total of 15-20 from an entire exhaust system.

you will not see anywhere near gains of 15-20 hp from bolt ons with our motors... maybe 5-7, and thats being generous.

K series will get you 20 hp from bolt ons. sorry to burst your bubble

I've shaved over 2 seconds off my 1/4 mile and am putting down about 160 whp. All I've done is IHE and a p12.
With me, 1/2 tank of gas and my stereo equipment in the car, she weighs in at about 3150 lbs and I can get her through the 1/4 at 15.87 @ 88.4 mph. The math says that means 155 whp by ET and 169 whp by trap speed.

15 or 20 hp from bolt ons is very realistic. Even if he only got say 3-5 from each item, IHE would put him at 9-15 hp, however, each one works with the other ones to give more power. Say the intake gives him 5 (just a number) by itself, and the exhaust gives him 5 by itself. Because they each make the other one work a little better (more air in and out than each by itself gives) there is an slight exponential increase in power, so instead of just 5+5 = 10, you can see an additional 2 or 3 hp. Like a bonus. You won't ever see the humbers like the ebay sellers would have you believe, but you can still get 15-20 from IHE.

i agree with what you're saying, how one of them wont do that much with the other, but i still dont ever see one of our motors, gaining much from I/H/E

i'd personally like to see a dyno of before and after of the same motor stock and with I/H/E.

Have you not read the sticky about making 30 hp for less than $500?

If you want to make power for little money... hit up a junkyard, or www.car-part.com

Look for:

F22A4 header - $15 (90-91 Accord EX)
F22A6 camshaft - $25 (92-93 Accord EX)
F22A6 ECU - $25
H23A1 intake manifold and throttle body (from a Prelude SI, 92-96 I believe) - $45
F22A6 IAB "black box" (to be able to activate the secondary runners, the intake air bypass, in the H23 manifold) - no price listed... probably $10 or so.

The prices are from my local junkyard, which is average for most things.


Your stock F22A1 engine's horsepower rating is at 125. The F22A6 parts alone will bring you to 140. The A4 header should get you to 145 (the ONLY difference between the A1 and A4 is the tubular header on the A4... which is superior to both the A1 and A6, which both have cast manifolds) The H23 intake manifold and plenum should add another 5hp or more... no exact figures are set for that.

If you do the camshaft, which isn't a HUGE part, but it helps, you're going to want to replace all the gaskets and seals you come across... good preventative maintenance anyway! That'll be another few bucks... but not a whole lot.

Get a cheap short ram intake. Have a muffler shop slap a 2.25" system for you.

The stock Honda parts would run about $120. A cheap short ram can be had for $50 or less. Exhaust... depends where you go. I paid $450 for new piping, cat, and muffler. You can probably get away with keeping your stock cat. Find a cheapie muffler on ebay, maybe a used one. Pay for piping and labor only. $200 at most for everything, I'd say.

So... that's under $400, and you can gain a minimum of 30hp... that doesn't include the intake and exhaust gains.

i've seen it, but yet i haven't seen a dyno sheet for it. our cars are pretty well unleashed from the factory... they are made to be quiet (which i hate, believe me i'm not trying to defend factory parts) but they are also made to be efficient. they flow quite fine, and don't really need an upgrade, and if they are... i have a hard time believing it'll be in excess of 10hp. if you can find a dyno sheet, i'll be a believer

but is the intake manifold really considered a bolt on item? as far i was concerend bolt ons were I/H/E. i'm sure theres not definitive answer, but thats my assumption. swapped intake manifolds and cams may be over the head of some people... in which case they want just I/H/E which is still even then too complicated

edit: thats what the OP was asking about... maybe thats why i'm so stuck on just those 3 items

o so say i do the whole 30hp for less then 500 dollars but i use after market header in stead of the one you mention will i get the same results.
