    spark plugs, 20 hours old?

So, car started spittin' and sputtering a little about a week ago. Figured I got bad gas, but it only started sputtering at about 5,000 to 6,000rpms, then would stop and I'd have full power again from 6,000 to 6,500. Stopped at Advance, got some STP Fuel System cleaner (the 9 dollar shit, complete fuel system treatment), and when I was leaving Advance, it was now sputtering throughout all rpms. Take off to 6 grand. So, take off at the next light, sputter all the way up to 6k, it shifts into 2nd, full power....3rd, full power. Let off. Seemed like the car was back to normal. Does well the rest of that tank. (full tank). Gas light comes on, put 15 bucks in. Was doing well, then out of nowhere, a spit. (on the highway).

Now, I'm pissed. Pick up my buddy, and we were going to pick his girl up, stopped at the light, car completely stalled. Started back up, sounded like a Subaru, but so much worse. Now it's not just spitting and sputtering, it's dying. We pull into the parking lot with some light, while it was running, started pulling the plug wires off each at a time. Pull #3 off the plug, car didn't make any difference at all. Pulled the plug out, the electrode was bent over, basically fouled the plug out. This was last night. Replaced all 4 of the plugs in the parking lot. (had a new set already in the car) Did well, 5 minutes later.....spitting again. Now....it only spits on light throttle and idle. When I get on it, I have full power. Getting up to speed, no sputter. Once I'm at speed and coasting, spit, sputter, spit. So annoying. Pulled the plugs out a few minutes ago, here's what the #3 looks like. These plugs have only been in for about 20 hours. I'm running pretty rich, also. Never had this problem before, and the engine's ran rich since I got it installed last year. Here's a photo of the "20 hour" plugs.

When was the last time you replaced/changed...
      1. the air filter?
      2. spark plug wires?
      3. distributor cap?
      4. distributor rotor?
      5. ignitor?
      6. coil?

Are you loosing any oil? Blowing any blue smoke?

Are you loosing any coolant? Blowing any white smoke?

check your timing belt sounds like it might be loose. i have had that happen to me before. it acted the way you are describing. as for the plug if it is going in and out of time it is possible that it is leaning on some of the strokes and creating heat to warp that s...
good luck with it and keep us posted on what you might find as i am intrested in this one

          1. the air filter? About 2 weeks ago.
          2. spark plug wires? About a year old, Accel 8.5mm's
          3. distributor cap? Never
          4. distributor rotor? Never
          5. ignitor? Never
          6. coil? Never

Not losing any coolant. Only smokes when I get on it, from running very rich. The gas smell is horrrible. I'm leaking just a tad of oil, I think it's coming from the oil pan. Nothing I have to keep an eye on the oil for, though.

edit: Does a whole new distributor come with everything, coil, ignition module, ignition coil, etc? My gas mileage is pretty shitty with this new engine, and I've replaced everything I can to help the gas mileage. Everything, but stuff inside the distributor.

Just asking, because people talk about an "ignitor", and I have no idea what that is. Looks like the ignition module. It's nowhere on Advance's site. They have the Ignition Coil and Ignition module.

Yea, I could do that. Is there a possibility that I could just take this stuff apart, and clean it out, and it be the reason for this, and not have to replace anything? And could there be a possibility that Oil's coming out of the O-Ring or something? I'd rather start taking stuff apart for free, or buying a o-ring, than paying 200 for a whole new distributor and it not even be the problem.

im more worried about why the electrode was bent. also why are you reving to 6000 if your engine is sputtering? dont push your engine if you know something is wrong with it thats how you cause serious damage!

good eye, i didnt see that. that could be the entire reason why it's sputtering. that cylinder isnt even firing fromt he lack of gap!

What's the history on the motor? If I'm reading you right you've now pulled out two sets of plugs, both with bent electrodes on the #3 cylinder...

Motor's a swap. Was put in last May, I've put about 40k on it since. Ran pretty good the entire time. Just runs rich. When it first started sputtering, I figured I got bad gas, or the injector(s) were clogged. After a good take off after I added the fuel treatment, it went away. I got another 200 miles after that with the rest of the tank without 1 spit or sputter. (never changed the plugs yet) Put more gas in it, and it started back up, but this time it completely fouled the plug. Replaced the plugs last night and it started sputtering again after 5 minutes.

I put another thing of the fuel treatment in and seafoamed it today. About to put a new set of plugs in here in about 15 minutes, and see how that goes.

The electrode bending is my concern also. I ran about 60 miles on that plug in 20 hours, babying it, and it did that...for the second time. The one before that one completely fouled out.

that's wierd...something within the combustion chamber is bending it and it cant be a piston since they are dished.

Last night I also checked my firing order and such. Thing it could be caused from a bad wire? Getting spark...but not getting the spark it needs? In the back of the Hynes Manual, the closest match for the condition would be the one that's "Too Hot", and it's bending just like mine.....but in the book it's white. Would you think since I'm running so rich, mine's black? There's no oil in my plugs, which is another thing I checked. The worst is the "mechanical damage", but that plug is destroyed. Mine's nowhere near as bad as that.
