    Horrible transmission leak, HELP!

After nine_deuce helped me put a new CV axle on the passenger side of my 91 5spd, i had driv'n home and was about 45 mins into my drive and it slips out of 5th gear... Hmm im thinking, put it back, does it again...

So I get home after smelling oil and fighting my tranny to keep it in 5th. I look under my car, (after pushing threw a cloud of smoke) and look under my car to see oil spray from the tranny to my back bumper. I am almost positive its my CV axle oil ring???

I remember seeing a dangleing rubber thing in the CV transmission housing but didn't think anything of it. But now that I have, it looks like oil (tranny fluid) was leaking out of the transmission where the CV axle inserts into the tranny. I never knew there was an oil seal their until I got home and looked it up...

Does this sound like the problem? and would this cause my tranny to slip out of gear??? I assume the fluid level in the tranny is very low if not empty, (good thing i got home an saw it). Does all this sound like the root of my problems? Thanks everyone, and good to be back!

P.S. hope napa has this in stock so I can get it fixed an get my new alarm installed Saturday!!! YAH!!!

Thats possible, I remember a rubberish ring that seemed broken and dangling, for some ODD reason, I didn't think of fluid leaking out. That was dumb. Almost cost me a tranny....

looks like there is a small gap between the axle and the transmission, (mabey 1/4") and the other side is flush. I need to get the tools to take this back off and put the new seal on. Im not sure if there is sappose to be a small gap between the cv and trans but I don't think so. I guess i'll just try to push it back in flush after puting the new seal in and see what happens. I think the axle nut is a 32, because thats what im going to get but not sure.

The axle nut is a 36. And your axle isn't seated, do that first and see if it still leaks

x2 I just had a run in with an aftermarket axle that was improperly machined, so the circlip would not lock into the groove. It took multiple tries and axles to get it to stay. I would change the seal regardless. If it pops out of gear in fifth, it may have gone too far without oil. Let's hope not.

          Good luck

            Got it

Sorry it took so long to reply but I put the new seal in on fri. The old one had a chunk of rubber hanging off of it, the new one was a bit different, I got it from Jerry's and it had a little flange around the outer edge unlike the oem one. It went in after multiple try's and a little force. Filled ut up with 5w30 and popped the CV back in. (only about 4oz of oil came out the drain plug!). Anyways, got it back together and have driven almost 100 miles since then. Seems fine, when I got back home today the exhaust piping under the car was still smoking from old oil I presume.

There dosn't seem to be any leakage, but is there any way I can check my tranny oil level withought taking a lot of stuff apart again? I filled it threw the CV opening with a turkey baster and by just putting the opening of the oil bottle in their. I know you can take that fill plug out to fill and mabey check it but its kina a bitch & 1/2 to get too... All the gears were fine while drving an no slipage. Thanks guys.
