    overheating! headgasket gone?

My gyrls 92 lx was running hot. Radiator was leaking so replaced it and t-stat. Now car still runs hot and upper hose swells. Replace upper, heater, & bypass hose. Ran ok for a lil bit, but still got hot. Can it be my water pump? Now got a new symptom. Car sputters when i start. 15 sec. then idles fine. White smoke out the tail. Can the Headgasket be gone? Gonna try a compression test soon. Also, oil light came on. I Got oil. Hope it is not oil pump.

Not sure about the rest, but, water pumps pump coolant as long as they are turning. What makes a bad water pump is leaking.

It could of been the water pump impeller was gone, I recall a thread maybe 6 months ago, the car would overheat with the t-stat in and run cool without it. Turned out the water pump impeller blades were gone.

Seems like your engine's building pressure. Mine did the same, and was so bad it'd squirt out of my cap with it fully closed. I kept driving it like a moron, and had to replace the entire engine.

thermostat, definitely waterpump, and timing belts. Oil pump, ehhhh. Really isn't a MUST, but if you have the extra cash and have the time to replace it, go for it man. I'm one to replace things I know haven't ever been replaced on the car. Suchas me being in the works of replacing a heater core. Oh man is it a pain in the ass. haha

Oh, and while you have the head off, replace your spark plug tube seals!! Take you 2 minutes with the head disassembled.

definitely a HG. I had the same sputtering for about 15-30 seconds....it'll gradually get worse and sputter longer the more it leaks. But yeah if the car's still drivable, I would start getting parts to do that HG as soon as you can, b/c it might just give out on you one day.

Also are you losing coolant? do you constantly have to fill coolant in the rad. or overflow? What's happening is its leaking into your combustion chamber when the car is off, and when you go to start it, it burns the coolant off, thus causing the stuttering for the first 15 sec.

The HG itself was about 75 from Majestic, then I got a 3 angle valve job for 300, ARP headstuds for 135, Bisimoto IM gasket for 57 and then the rest prob. 50 for coolant, and oil/filter.

But all you'd need is 75 for the HG and maybe about 50 for the milling of the head...if you're head is in good shape. I had everything done on my cyl. head though, so that's why it cost so much. But now's a good time to do the timing belt if its close to replacement. Since you prob. will have to wait at least a day or two for the machine shop to get the work done. I had to wait 3 since my work was more extensive. But my belts and pump were done like 10k ago, so i didn't do em. Its all up to you what you want to do in the end though.

What does burp the system mean? I am doing the water pump and head gasket right now. i see fluid at the bottom timing cover so the water pump must have been leaking. Not sure if i a donig seals. Just the balancer seal retainer install.

IT was inside the cover? or on it. plus burp means to run all the air out of the water system.

headgasket blew as a result of the overheating. fix the overheating problem first. the cooling system is probably being rpessurized.

                            just thought i would add
92accord coupe-260 000kms timing belt wp and all seals and belts changed at 245 000 due to maintenance schedule, not failure.

just lost the headgasket idling in traffic to work. the car overheated 4 days ago and recieved and new rad, themostat and cap. i thought it would fix it due to the original rad & cap aswell as the thermostat did look terribly corroded and the rubber looked like crap ( swelled up from oil/ fuel i assume). well not so lucky . the head gasket finally gone and is allowing major coolant too the cylinders.

This might sound stupid, but make sure your fans are plugged back into the connectors, I forgot to do that and mine heated up super fast after I installed my radiator. Just sayin'.
