ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

Could this be the main relay?

Ok here's the deal, I don't have my CB7 anymore, haven't for over a year now, but a friend of mine just bought a slightly wrecked CB7 for $550 and was driving it home when it all of a sudden decided to go kaput.

The car is a 92 LX, automatic transmission, 217K on the clock. Other than the driver's side headlight area being smashed in the car ran like a charm and drove fine, with the exception of some motor vibration (much more noticeable when put into reverse, it would rattle hard), which I think is probably a busted motor or transmission mount.

Well anyway, he went to turn the car around in a parking lot after making a wrong turn, and when he put it into reverse it suddenly just sputtered and died. When turning the key again it simply wouldn't do anything. We tried jumping it, nothing.

Now here's what's got me confused, the battery is still holding a charge (it's new for one thing) because the horn, brake lights, and hazard lights still work fine, but the HVAC, headlights, taillights, turn signals, power windows, and of course STARTER don't do a thing, like they're not getting power whatsoever.

Now I seem to remember there being an issue with the main relay going out in these cars (or was that my 3G Accord?). Do you guys think this could be the issue? Or should I look somewhere else? Thanks!

Have you checked the fuses under the hood? The main relay usually lets it crank, but no fuel.

If it was your main relay your fuel pump wouldn't prime. Do you hear it priming everytime you put the car in the on position? It's a slight humming from behind you if your in the driver seat, get someone to go to the back driverside tire and wait for you to put it on the on position, if it primes then your okay.

Check and clean the battery connections and grounds. You'd be amazed how many cars just cut off due to problems there.

A new battery with dirty battery cables will still cause problems. Loose cables would cause the car to cut out (it's happened to me).

yeah that's one of my plans this afternoon to check all of the cables, grounds, etc...

this just kinda has me worried though, because it's obviously getting electrical power (horn, hazard, and brake lights work), but NOTHING else works electrically at all.

When you turn the key to the auxiliary power position (II), do the dash lights come on as they should? And when you turn it to crank the motor, does it click and they shut off?

If so... that's exactly what happened with my dirty and loose battery cables.

i just soldered the connections back together on my main relay, do i still have to drill holes in the box or is that just a preventative thing to help cool it down for next time

                  ^^ its preventitave...

Maybe the ignition switch is bad.

If only the brake lights, horn, and hazard work in all the igniton positions, than the car is getting power, but the switch inside is not making contat to tell the control unit to let the other accesories work. Or even let the starter make contact for that matter...

ok, when putting the key into the ON position, no dash lights, no click when you try to crank, nothing.

we were playing around with it yesterday though and I checked the under-hood fusebox, and guess what? the 80A fuse labeled BATTERY was blown. well I tried swapping in the 40A from the rear defroster or something just to see if we could get ANYTHING, but it blew the second I touched the battery cable to the battery.

i'm guessing a short, any ideas where to start looking for a short that could cause this? I'd imagine it'd have to be a pretty bad one.

Unfortunately, I can't think of any areas that are common for such shorts. Since the car is new to you guys, you can't even retrace your steps and think of what might've been damaged while working on the car.

I'd say start with the battery cables, and start tracing wires. Something is damaged somewhere...

well the driver's side front headlight area is smashed, it's entirely possible that something is grounding out in there, I just didn't think any of those wires were thick enough to cause a short capable of blowing an 80A fuse without just melting.

Eh, electrical stuff can be tricky. You never know! That's the place to start, though. It's also near the battery, so there could be something else nearby that got damaged... something a little beefier, perhaps.

d'oh. I somehow saw passenger's side! That's what I get for replying as soon as I wake up!

Ok, so no crazy beefy wires over there... something near the alternator maybe?
