ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

New Accord new member many questions

Hello all, I work with a co worker who is selling a 1990 Accord LX it only has 50,000 miles, she is the original owner. The car has not been started in five years and is inside her garage. I offered her $500.00 and she accepted. My coworker got a company car and hasn't used it in ten years and she just wants it gone. Good for me because it is clean in and out (no kids).

Well now for my question. I will use a car trailer to pick it up because I'm afraid to try to start it and snap a belt or clog an injector with bad gas.

Is there a drain plug for the gas tank?
I plan to drain the tank prime the fuel lines from the fuel rail and then replace the fuel filter and prime again.
I will then replace the timing belt, water pump and thermostat. I fear the belt may be dry rotted from seating so long.
Any other advance? Am I missing anything?

    Thanks to all in advance.

My plans are to make this my daily driver and sell my 07 Focus to CarMax and get out of car payments for good.

i'm pretty sure the gas tank has a plug on it. my 92 lx did.

if anything i would wait off on the new thermostat... if it runs after the timing belt/waterpump i'd do a tune up and then include it in that

you may also want to try changing the fuel filter too, it may help

I've heard that it's a good idea, with a car that's been sitting as long as that, After the timing belt change, and before you put the spark plugs back in, spray some engine oil directly in the cylinders (take the spark plugs out) and turn the engine by hand by the crankshaft pulley bolt for multiple revolutions/ through the entire rotation sequence for a while before starting it up. There is a good chance there will be some rust on the cylinder walls since it's been sitting 5 years, and at the very least this will relube the cylinder walls and the piston rings while they are still shrunk up from being cold.

this makes sense to me, but others may want to chime in.

congratulations on the awesome deal and release from car debt bondage!

I'm sure you can drive that car for another 20 years in Florida. If it's a manual 5 speed that'd be even sweeter.

I still have my original clutch and I have 220K miles on my 92 dx manual 5 speed.

these cars will go and go and go. they are great.

Unfortunately it's a automatic. But traffic has gotten so bad down here in Miami / Ft. Lauderdale I'm probably better off in the long run. Thanks for the idea regarding engine oil in the cylinders good idea!

Get a copy of the 90-93 Accord Haynes manual. It'll list what needs done after 50,000 miles (which given how long its been sitting is probably a good idea). That and it comes in handy when little things pop up.

yeah, but make sure you know how to do it so as not to overfill.

There seems to be a little bit of confusion about the fluid level and how/when to check the level--there was a thread about it recently.

I'll take a look in my Helm manual to see what Honda says to do.

By the way, if you didn't know, the normal direction of crankshaft rotation on Honda engines is counterclockwise when viewed from the crankshaft pulley.

Pictures will come in a couple of weeks. The Honda is three hour drive away from home. I am going to pick it up on Nov 1. I actually have never seen the car. I trust the owner I have worked with her for seven years. The car has always been garaged since new and at her previous job it was parked in a parking garage.

Thanks for all the info so far.

Yes, sometimes you just know when a deal is good and you don't have to check the car out. I'd say good call.

Interestingly, I have observed that this kind of deal usually is possible mostly when women are the owners I find. For example, many (not all) women, in particular, will give up on a car based upon what I consider minor, or at least normal, mechanical problems. "My brake line broke and I've already put a lot of money into it--I decided to donate it to charity"--a woman I know recently told me this and I almost offered to buy the car off her sight unseen. My first thought was, "you were surprised at this? the car is 12 years old! You have to check on that stuff and anyways its an easy fix! Plus you probably just replaced most of the stuff that can go wrong within the last year!"

I almost offered her $1000 on the spot, sight unseen, even though I'd have to drive 3 hours to get it and have it fixed on location because of the brake issue. (Didn't, since I already have a car and didn't have a lot of spare cash at the time).

Keep us posted on the car adventure once you take possession of it, I'm curious to see how it turns out for you.
