ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Attempting to Diagnose CEL Reveals Nothing

Hello everyone. I'm a new poster, but I've been carefully watching what's been going on here for a few weeks. I've made great use of a lot of the valuable knowledge here on this site, but now I feel I should ask this question.

I have a 92 EX Auto. The CEL has been on since I bought the car three years ago. I've been told by multiple people that it's an O2 sensor code. Twice have I replaced the sensor (the one in the exhaust near the back, I think it is?) and twice, the CEL was reset. It always comes back.

Yesterday, I thought that I would check the code (my first time checking the code myself). I connected the two wires on the blue connector with a paperclip and turned the car to ACC. Nothing happened. The D4 light did not blink at all. However, I know there's continuity through the paperclip because I got a nice shock when I went to touch the paperclip to remove it.

My question is: has anyone here heard of that happening? If so, what was the problem in the past? I have not yet tried to trace the wire to the ECU to see if there is a problem with the connector. That is next.

Any help here would be awesome.

Edit: (oh, also I have both pulled the ECU / Backup fuses for 5 minutes, and another time I pulled the negative battery terminal for over an hour. CEL's still on.)

Turn the car on with the paperclip on the connector, That's how I got my codes.

I thought you don't want to turn the car on all of the way or you'd damage something. If that's the case that all you have to do is turn the car on all of the way, I'm going to hate myself for not reading enough!

        Hmm?

Sooooo....what's the scoop? Do I turn the car on all of the way, or will I fry something?

If the check engine light is not flashing at all, maybe you have a bad ECU.

Try one from a JY or a friend.

You can't get the code on ACC position , you have to put it on the ignition position where all the lights on the dash does the pre-flight check.

No wonder you can't get anything.

I've tried every position short of fully starting the car. I'm sorry, I should have been more clear with that.

                Try a smaller paper clip.
The first time I tried, I was using one that was too big.
                But, the smaller one worked.

                Just a suggestion.

                  oh ok my bad.

Keep trying , if nothing really comes up then it's a faulty ECU.

When I did it and I put the key where all the lights are on the light didn't flash. The second I turned the car on it started flashing.

reset the ECU in the fuse box and wait for the CEL light to come back on. Then check it. Take note on how long it takes for the CEL light to come back on... I am thinking a bad ECU will turn that CEL light fairly quickly where as an O2 sensor might take a few minutes until the car is in a closed-loop situation after it warms up.

Ah. If that's the case, then crap. I have had SOME trouble finding a P16 (I think it's a P16 in the EX?) replacement for my car in the past. I have never seen my CEL take longer than a few seconds to turn on.

*sigh*...I'll check it out after work today.

I WISH I knew someone personally with a CB7! That would be sweet! We could share knowledge and help each other work on the cars.

                            EX ECU is a PT6.
