ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Need help with cv joint replacement!

Ok, so i had this classical knocking noise coming from my right wheel. So i bought a new cv joint, but in the Haynes manual it says it cant be replaced? I have taken the entire axel of, and still cant get it off. Is it even possible to replace it or will i have to buy a new axel?
    Thank you!

Its fine i hope. The reason my cv joint gave up was that the rubber thing round it broke, so most of the oil was gone

Ok, that was pretty raw auto repair. My compliments.

I will apologize ahead of time for a couple of the following questions if they seem obvious to you, I just want to make sure you've considered a few safety things:

          1) a question: how does the new cv joint stay on? is there some kind of retaining ring? If it doesn't have positive engagement/retention, and it pops off, that's highly undersirable

          2) Also, I am sure you thought of this, but to be sure, be aware that (I believe, at least logically this makes sense) that the cv joint needs to be designed for a specific overall axle length (length from wheel to wheel) if it is to do its job properly. (rotate the turned wheels at the correct speeds relative to one another. If they are mismatched (designed for the wrong axle length) it will strain your tranny.

          3) where did you get the CV joint?

wouldnt it have been easier to change the whole axle?
they are cheap and you incur way less mess and hassle then disassembling the joints.

just a new cup and grease wont repair the damage that has been done to the bearings.

dont be surprised if your axle keeps clicking, unless you got all new bearings and stuff with the new joint.

            Bought from: Bisimoto, FuncOvrForm, HondaGuy1212, wed3k, Konigstiger, 1st2run, BillKisme, k-mart, benjerman112

Safety? Well everything is exactly like it was stock, only difference i got a new joint. The cv joint has like you said a ring that stops it from popping out, thats why its souch a bitch to get it off.

To answer 2 and 3. Well i got it from a local dealership, and it is specificly made for a cb7. I dont see why it should be a mismatched.

              Thanks for your concern

You are absolutly correct, my bad. If i had known that it was so hard to replace, i would probably have changed the whole thing. At the moment it seems like i have been lucky cuz there are no noise comming from the wheels.

I would recomend people to change the whole axel if they have the same problem. Either way they will have to take it off.

cool. thanks for the info, I've always wondered how they were held on.

also, regarding the pain in the ass factor of fixing this compared to switching it out with a (nonHOnda) axle, (assuming this fixes the thing as, again, you didn't mention that you replaced the bearings as well), hanging onto an original Honda axle does have its merits, as what everyone says is, once you start switching out the axle with a NonHonda aftermarket one, yu start having to replace them fairly frequently.

As it is, mine is going on 17 years onld with no clicking--just rebooting when I've had cracks in the boots.
