will cleaning EGR + egr ports really give more MPG?

Just see the dirty EGR ports as....a stuffy nose. If your nose is stuffy, you have a little trouble breathing through it. If your EGR ports are clogged, the EGR valve is just havin' trouble. Unless the EGR valve is bad, you won't throw a code. These cars are very old, and it doesn't really matter how many miles you have on the engine. 100,000 or 300,000. Your EGR ports are clogged. It's pretty easy to get to. I take my plenum off every once in awhile, to clean it out, and I've been messin' with the butterflies, and I notice...with the plenum off.....I can get to every one of the ports, with no problem at all. The thing is....when you drill into the EGR ports plugs....don't drill ALLL the way. Get a thread on it, and yank it. That way, you can put the plug back into the port, with no modification needed to the plugs. And, so you can do it again with no problem at all. Some people recommend taking the whole intake manifold off. I mean, that could be done....and during that time, you could clean your whole intake manifold. But, that'd be up to you.

at work, we have wobbly extensions that allow the socket to wiggle side to side a bit. that works very well for egr.

i block my egr off and i dont really notice a huge difference in mileage.

so brake and carb cleaner work best for this...and 1 question where is the egr valve located and ports?? i think i will clean this when installing intake

you have to remove it physically, the cleaners wont do it.

okay so i have to physically move it then clean it but also where is it located in the engine bay??

i just went out to my car and now i see what youre talking about. my tools seem to get only a little bit of an angle, but its possible to take off.

^^^^^^^ On the left of your valve cover. Can't miss it! I used Carb. Cleaner. Worked fine, just...you gotta get something inside of the Valve, cause just puttin' cleaner in it, won't do the whole job. I just used a little pipe cleaner, and a few q-tips.

thanks for the pic but I still don't really see it does anyone have a more clear picture very new to this this is going to be my first time tunning a car and barely know anything about this car. I want to do this cuz I really assum that my cars egr valve is dirty because it has ran 330000 miles already thanks for the help again.

A shop is going to replace it with a new one or charge you at least 3 hours of labor......

Cleaning an EGR valve is easy stuff. The hardest part is getting the two nuts off.
All it takes is a a couple of minutes with a socket and a swivel (some people don't need it).
Here is a clear shot of the two nuts holding the EGR valve on the intake manifold (some items were removed for clarity).

okay thank you frootloops that looks simple enough so take the two nuts off then with brake or carb cleaner and tissue/towel just clean it?? also do i need to unplug the thing on top of the egr valve??

Yeah, disconnect the wiring harness from the EGR valve and completely remove it from the vehicle. Spray carb cleaner in it, scrub, spray, scrub, repeat until it's clean enough for ya.

I've even soaked mine in Seafoam for a day and that did wonders.
Brake cleaner doesn't work all that well.
